I tried a search and there are just so many posts to go through I am hoping someone can get me a direct link to one. I am having issues with Tuner 2 searching for signal on AMC and IFC to name a few. The signal strength on tuner 2 is no where near as consitently strong as tuner 1. Is this a known issue and If so what do I do for resolution?

it is a known issue for tuner 2 to be 5-8 points lower.

it would help to post numbers

When I had my install done at my new house in August, I too had nearly 0 readings on Tuner 2 in my living room while Tuner 1 was getting 90s and 100 (also both tuners were fine in the bedroom). Tech came back out and added about 50' extra cable between the dish and the living room HR21 and then magically my Tuner 2 signals were just as good as Tuner 1 in the living room.

He said it was a known issue that if your DVR was very close to the dish resulting in a short cable run, then Tuner 2 would have problems. He said he fixed about 10 Tuner 2 problems simply be adding extra cable.

The reason I never had an issue with Tuner 2 in the bedroom is because that cable run was much longer than the living room run due to the layout of the house.

    The issue appears to be with tuner 2. Here are readings for that tuner as 1 is coming in strong;

Malarky, my dish is on the other side of the house. It's a software issue.

I agree. I have the same tuner 2 problem and my DVR is actually farther away from the dish than my other receiver that does not have the problem. So adding cable length is not the solution. My signal strengths on tuner 2 are just as good as tuner 1, but for some reason the 'Searching for Signal on 2' message shows up for about 5 seconds then goes away.

Yeah my cable run lengths are identical so I can't see how this would be the issue. Either way it is VERY annoying.

I was just relaying my personal experience with low Tuner 2 readings and what solved it for me. I hope your's get fixed soon.

    Lancaster,...
When I tune to a local HD channel, I almost always get a 771 message for Tuner 2 for 1 second and then the channel comes on. Weird. Do others see this? It's been going on for a few months now.

I had a tech out on Friday. I was having a problem with a HR20-100 that had 771 on several channels and many of the odd transponders on the 101 had 0 signal strength on the second tuner. You could pull the cable on tuner two and it would be ok for about 5 minutes and than would go out again. He finally replaced the HR20 with a HR22-100 and it fixed the problem. Bonus for me is getting the black unit and additional storage space on the HR22.

Interesting thread. I actually have a tech coming out on January 2nd for an issue with my HD DVR HR22-100. I have noticeably lower numbers on tuner 2 than I do on tuner 1.

It is amazing the different hardware solutions posted about the 771 on Tuner 2 issue. I've seen posts that installing SWM fixes it, now longer cable. I agree that this is a software issue and further more I think that the software for the HR2x models was optimized for SWM on units without BBCs. I hope we see a resolution soon. I had the issue for a few weeks and it was very annoying. Luckily, the problem has not surfaced for at least two weeks and I've done nothing. But, then with the holidays I've been watching less TV and spending more time with family and friends in conversation. Happy New Year!

I just noticed the same problem on both of my HR20-100s. I don't know when it started. So far no sign of the problem on my HR20-700.

Question for John in Cal: Were you using OTA on your HR20? I couldn't bear to part with my local PBS HD channel if I was offered an HR22. Hopefully, they would throw in an AM21.

The only odd thing was that sometimes the 0 strength transponders were odd and sometimes they were even. In all cases of a 771 or 0 strength signal, a quick disconnect and reconnect of the line to tuner 2 solved the problem, at least until the tuner was changed. Resets seemed to have no effect.

Life was great with my original HR10;went to heck in hand basket with the first HR20; about 18 months later things were stable and the MPEG4 channels were great; but now the pendulum has swung to trouble again. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

I also had serious Tuner 2 issues until a few months ago. I didn't even know this was a nation wide issue until tonight.

My previous tuner 2 readings would be 10 or more lower than tuner 1. It would normally take extra time to tune in an HD channel if I was watching an SD channel before. After some complaining a Rep came out to the house and "checked it all out" in about 2 minutes. He checked the transponders and said I had a problem. He noticed I had been using RG-59 coax on one of my lines. He thought the problem was also isolated the the receiver but after he replaced the coax cables with new RG-6 cables and both BBCs (at my request), the tuner 2 numbers are 1-2 lower than tuner 1 at times. I have not seen 771 since.

Prior to the fix I had swapped BBCs, coax cable, and the main coax cable from the dish, nothing worked. I honestly don't know if it was a single item failure or a combination of things. Of course my problem my not be the exact same problem others are experiencing but...

As a side note: I'm curious how the HR21 defines Tuner 1 and Tuner 2. Are they the hard physical inputs or can those inputs be shifted between the two tuners? (I guess a schematic would be helpful) What I've noticed is it appears to be problematic when shifting to an HD channel. And I just can't see how this tuner 2 problem is exclusivley a software problem, everyone seems to think all new hardware is built with absolute flexability. I'm thinking it's more a hardware design flaw.

Anyway, that's my little story and maybe it will help someone, maybe not.

Nope, My OTA routes into my Media Center HTPC. I never cabled into the OTA inputs on the HR20-100.

One thing I notice on the HR22 is that the tuner two levels are still about 10 down from tuner one. But I don't get the 0 signal on the odd transponders anymore and no more 771 on some channels.

I have had my HR20-700 for almost 2 years and didn't start having the Tuner 2 problem until a few months ago. For that reason I think it's a software issue rather than a hardware issue. Nothing in my hardware setup has changed in 2 years. The software is the only variable.

That's my gut feeling as well.

D* optimized the tuner code for SWM and forgot about the rest of us.

I never had a problem with tuner 2 until 0x290.

Well, this probably helps no one, but... On tuner 2 I have consistent 3-4 pt reduction on the HR20 closest to the dish and 6-10 points less on the most remote unit. In contrast to what has been said above, I have SWM8 so it is not apparent that they "optimized" the software for SWM from my experience. I never paid attention to any signal strength differences before switching over to SWM8. As far as actual signal problems, I haven't had any even on tuner 2 and I never get the 771 error.

Bingo! I think you are right on. I have had my HR20-100 since Jan 08 and also had no issues until a couple of months ago. My H20 works perfectly.

    All members of Club 771.

I wonder if this is a way of getting rid of certain receivers, which will mean $ for a new model or the need to enroll in the protection plan. Planned obsolescence.

I have been having the same problems. It all started after the software upgrade back in early November. If you google tjhe problem, many people on different forums are complaining about the same thing. DircTV says they have received no complaints about the problem????!!!!???
