    Salt Lake...
As I was writing out checks for my monthly bills last night, I kinda wondered....
With Charlie Ergen being one of the richest guys in America (one of the benefits of owning a fast-growing media empire), who gets his 10% Tithe?

Anyone know what Church he belongs to?

Um that 10% tithe is pretty much a Utah phenomena as the Mormons are the only ones I've heard of that "require" it. (Unless Charlie is a Mormon and we haven't heard about it.....)

not only mormons, baptists ministers talk up the 10% tithe on occasions the church needs money.

    To be fair,

    a) Most of Charlie's wealth is "paper", based on his stock ownership. The government doesn't tax capital gains until you sell -- do the Mormons get 10% of capital gains every year?

    b) Charlie's religion is none of our business, right?

He kinda looks Mormon, though. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Some denominations demand the tithe - some don't have to.
It is supposed to be a gift, not a payment of a bill.
Tis better to receive than to ask.

The Bible itself says 10%... but most churches do not demand it... I know my church does not say "10 % or else" they say "give as you feel led"

Is Charlie even of the Christian faith?

Ye shall know them by their fruits...

in this case I'm referring to the channels between 480 and 499. If he IS a Christian, he should be quite burdened over the decision that led to these channels being carried on his system, regardless of how much money it brings to the stockholders.

Only God knows the hearts of men but where ample evidence exists it is easy to come to a probably correct conclusion.

The same burden that SkyAngel has taken on by adding the Hallmark channels, Fox News and soon HGTV. They have opened the door to questionable content on their service.

Unlike SkyAngel Charlie can't run E* like a church owned property. He has allowed for porn channels but has made sure that they are easily hidden. Which is also good for their business as they would lose customers if they took away ALOCK.

If you can find a major business owner who can operate his business to higher moral codes you will probably find an old business or a smaller one. I wish he could pull off the 'adult channels' altogether. But back to reality ...

Agree 100%. Rumors had been circulating when then Dish Network President Carl Vogel left Dish that the reason was the carriage of adult channels. When Dish first started out and Carl was "in charge" the statement was made that Dish would be the family friendly DBS service. Suddenly they signed up Playboy and then several more "adult" channels and Vogel resigned. Of course he is back now and many more "adult" channels have been added since his departure.

A church that I used to go to said that 10% is a tithe as the Lord expects that, anything over that is a gift/giving.

True, have you noticed how many of those HGTV home makeover shows feature gay couples?

That is sure where it belongs.

While I'm here I might as well put in my two cents. I believe in supporting my church but I would NEVER belong to any church that told you (and even pressured you) to give 10 percent.

IMHO, some church preachers (and leaders) that I have met are as honest as a 70s style used car salesman and the more fundmentalist the religion the more dishonest they seem to be. And you should see some of these guys on some of the Sky Angel channels do their con job.

Is that a problem? Don't they deserve the chance to have their homes made over just like any body elses?

Of course not. Home ownership is between a man and a woman.

It's still OK for them to do the actual redecoration for straight couples though.

I suggest you change your evil ways before the invisible man in the sky hits you with his smiting stick.

Seeing gay couples shown in a positive light on a religious satellite system is the problem - not the fact that the gays got the prize of an updated home (or whatever was improved).

Then again the way some churches are going SkyAngel will probably have to add LOGO just to appease the shift in religious acceptance of homosexuality.
