I called about getting the whole home DVR setup tonight. The CSR said I need to replace my R-16 SD DVR for the installation, if I want it to be part of the setup.

She said the total to replace the old box with a new HD DVR would be $150. That includes the fee for having the tech come out and install everything. I would also have to make a new 2 year commitment.

I think $150 is pretty crazy to have a tech install a box and screw a couple little pieces onto the rest of my connections. I already have a SWM setup, so I don't think they need to do anything else.

What other options do I have for getting the installation done for cheaper (free) or getting out of the two year commitment that comes with a new box?

Previously, I bought a HR20-700 off eBay. Would doing that again help me at all?

The Whole Home DVR service needs the "connected home" networking.
The connected home networking upgrade is $99 + $49 service call.
Upgrading the R-16 to an HD DVR costs $199.
"Seems like" you're getting a good deal for both @ $150.
