Why does the HR44 freeze if you delete something that is downloading?

Why does the HR44 freeze if you delete something that is downloading? Most times if you try to delete a recording from the list, the whole UI freezes? It will eventually reboot itself after about 20 minutes, but I end up hitting the red button to reset.

Guessing a little here - but it sounds to me like a HDD issue. How full is your HDD?

You should run a system test and report back to us what you find.

Something that IS downloading, or shows that have already downloaded? Or both?

Couple years ago I would have said stop blaming the HDDs for every little thing. Now I agree with you. Things change and now I think damn near every problem we see is related to old HDDs. Evolution. System test will probably come up clean, the tests don't seem to flag cranky HDDs.

Exactly. A system test may eliminate most other possibilities.

Yup, run the system check and when it comes up with no problems think about an external device with a brand new drive. These DVRs can be made to work properly, waiting for D* to do something about the old HDDs is futile. Spend a few bucks and enjoy the DVRs, complaining about them and doing nothing when they can easily be fixed isn't the smartest path to take. There are no new HRs, we should be coping with what we have, I think.

Hi it freezes if you try to delete a program that is currently in process of downloading. If it’s already downloaded or recorded, there’s no issue.

It happened since the GUI refresh which I guess is going on for a year now. There’s no problems with live TV, double play, play back of existing recordings, skipping forward and backwards, or deleting existing recordings. If the orange light is illuminated and you go out and delete the program that is being downloaded 90% of the times the system freezes while it continues to play the audio and video in the upper corner of the screen. If you let the system go it’ll reboot it self in about 20 minutes. Or you could hit the red button and reboot it immediately and once it’s booted back up you were then able to safely delete the recorded program. Sometimes downloads get stuck as well. I guess 100mb hardwired internet directly into the HR44 isn’t fast enough. Funny my WiFi Roku has no problems instantly streaming 1080p content without any delay or buffering.

See the second post in this thread. Please let us know how full your HDD is, as well as the result of a system test so we can try and help you.

By the way, streaming video from a service like Netflix on a Roku is very different than downloading a video file to your DVR - very different process.

If his HDD is near full anything could happen.

I've seen this happen on my HR54. I think what happens is the DVR won't attempt to delete it until it is done downloading and locks you out of the GUI until it is done downloading and deleting. My reasoning for thinking this is because I have only had this problem if I try to delete something that is in the middle of downloading. Any other time I delete something it works fine.

Would love to see the OP tell us how much free space is on his HDD instead of repeating the symptoms to us.......

@b4pjoe - how much do you have?

Almost always above 80% free. Rarely gets more than 20% full.

Not much at all - I know @Rich recommends we never go below 50%. Not saying it's not your HDD, but if it is, that's not the reason.

Patient "Doctor, it really hurts when I do this."
Doctor "Then don't do that anymore."

At 100mbps download, it shouldn't take long to download. So just wait for the download to finish, then delete.

    It’s 44% free.

It says system test will Interrupt recordings so I have to do that another time. There’s some series my wife put on there and it shows 17 unwatched 4 are now recording, all showing 0 m (partial) channel 1237 BRAVO, HD 1080p. Outside of that folder the tonight show with Jimmie Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live are both recording. Guarantee if I try to delete the folder or any of the 4 recordings that are showing 0 m (partial) from ch 1237, it will freeze. I have 100% certainty on that, but I’m not going to touch it for now.

Yes I have 100mbps that works excellent (101/11 mbps speed tests) on both wired and wireless. It’s good for everything except DirecTV. I’m 6 episodes into Stranger Things season 3. If it wasn’t so late I’d start episode 7 now.

Ok so I ran the test and only 1 failed. Can it detect phone dial tone, code 72-598. Not sure why that is even relevant since they took away caller ID, but yet they talk about it on the screen.

@cypherx - Thanks for posting those results. This may remain a mystery.

You have a lot on that HDD, but it should not be freezing on you. Slowing down, perhaps (the norm for these DVR's unfortunately), but not freezing for 20 minutes.

@trh's advice is excellent (gave me a chuckle when I read it).

Just re-read this. Your On-Demand recordings are showing 0 minutes? Try re-running your Network Setup on your DVR's.

Makes my day when someone posts something that makes me laugh. I never use on demand channels (this thread bolsters that decision) because of things like this. I have no idea what's going on.
