Why doesn't Directv offer this?

If a DTV customer is will willing to sign another 2 year contract, they can get a discount like when you first signed the contract. Being loyal for another 2 years should be rewarded.
DirecTV customers can have 2 choices, you can get another contract for 2 years.....or, if you prefer not to be on another contract, the rates will stay the same and above.
Sort of like some auto insurance companies where you get discounts for keeping the same provider.

Obviously, once you signed a new contract, the same penalties are still in affect if you decide to bail, just like the first two years.
The cable companies always advertise that you have no obligation on staying, but why doesn't DTV counter that with "if you stay with us another 2 years, we'll give you an additional discount".

The discount well isn't bottomless. You do realize DIRECTV is a business, not a charity? In business the name of the game is profits. Local channels, News channels and Government channels are necessary. All other channels are a luxury and luxury is always expensive.

Why don't you call DirecTV and ask? You might just get a nice offer if you're out of contract.

It is very simple, they don't have to.

Not everyone would even agree that those are necessary.

Service costs what it costs. The discounts for a year are to lure you in and if you like the service you stay. Other option is just switch between Directv and Dish every 2 years :)

Id rather use the two year upgrade for a new HDDVR if one is out.

The only time that someone is "on contract" is when they get new equipment of have been given something for free or at a discount. So, the entire premise of this thread is inaccurate. Your choices are you can go back on contract if you accept something from DirecTV that you believe is worth committing for another year or two or you can have no commitment, continue to pay the regular price, and be able to cancel at any time, with no penalty.
