Just wondering peoples experience. I was offered the free Genie upgrade due to the discontinue service of the Genie go. I also got offered the newest Genie which is 4k. This is great because I have a 4k tv and it is one that does not need the C61K. If the only thing that is needed is to swap out the Genie box, why is Directv want me to pay $50 for an install? Just confused since the security of HDCP 2.2 is built into the devices.

    Any thoughts?

HR54's (for 4K) service, often times require a new LNB. Its more than a box swap.

They also replace the LNB on your dish with a newer one that can get the reverse band when they do 4K upgrades.

This is what I was told:
the tech needs to actually activate that in the the receiver for the account. We are not able to ship out those receivers and have them work in 4k, the technician has to do it.

The tech needs to turn on the 4k at the box? just seems odd

I am a Tech, Can I do it.
All I need is the instructions.
I was under the impression, features were activated from Customer Service or Tech Support.
The technicians always tell me they can't do this stuff, it has to be from a placed Order, then the office will activate it.

You can do a gg genie swap without 4k install for no charge, it sounds like you either asked for 4k too, or the agent just assumed you also wanted 4k and added the rvu/4k install which is 49.95

The newest GENIE is the HR-54 ($ 7.00)
    It is NOT 4-K
You need it - PLUS a mini Genie that works with 4-K ($ 7.00)
    They are $ 7.00 each per Month. = $ 14.00 for (1) TV
Even if you have a NEW TV that does NOT need the C-61-K mini genie, you will still be charged $7.00 in addition to the MAIN GENIE

You will need a a C61K or a 4K RVU. No current DirecTV receiver can display 4K without one. The HR54 is the only Genie that can display real-time broadcast 4K, through the C61K or RVU. The HR44 can only record 4K and them play it back through the C61K or RVU. Part of the install is to replace the LNB with a one capable of the new Reverse Band for future 4K.

Not for the HR44 (or H44 GL + HDD).

They cannot receive any of the linear 4K broadcasts on the chs. 104-106.

    Only 4K VODs on ch. 1102 ...

    I don't really know ...

Must be something different about their hardware though from the HR54 since they run the same firmware.

there is really no technical reason why the HR44 cant send those channels to either the C61K or a 4K RVU TV. The real reason is that the HR54 is classified as being a 4K SKU which is needed to activate the 4K service flag on a customer account.

So to sum up, the why is because DIRECTV said so. No other reason.
