Every DVR has its own fleas. I do not want to argue who's are worse.

We have seen first hand developement programs handled internally by DIRECTV vs. ones done by TiVo.

With the HR20, an update notice might be given on a Wednesday for a new release the following Friday.

A TiVo update notice given on a Monday might be for the following year.

My personal take is D* wanted the ability to control certain aspects of the UI and experience. But the TiVo egos thought they already had the best UI and experience and this became a sticking point.

Then RM arrives on the scene with NDS in tow and says NDS can make a box just as good. So NDS gets a shot and you end up with the train wreck also known as the R15. (Note: I do not have one and from what I have read it is now much, much better that is was when released.)

Once D* figured out that the NDS box was not what RM had promised, they set out to develop their own DVR based on code that Motorola bought from (somebody help me here as I forgot the name of the company:blush: ) Now that it seems this code base was much better than the NDS code and has made a nice DVR, D* really has no reason to go back to TiVo for an MPEG-4 DVR.

It's the "to go" I miss, Tom. I was building a reference library of things like Good Eats, for example. For streaming I have a Slingbox.

May the fleas of a thousand DVRs infest your enemies...Oh wait, I know you well enough to know you don't have enemies nor would you ever want that wished upon them if they existed. :) (But I like the imagery of your opening statement.)

    Cheers,
    Tom

Every time I see this thread title pop to the top I get a chuckle. It reminds me of my 5yo niece's favorite response/followup to any answer I give her questions - but why? :)
