    Thanks for the Welcome Nick. Yes, you are right that I just HAPPENED to join in time for this contest. Who wouldn't want to win such a great prize? After all, the rules don't say there's anything wrong in registering to win right? ~ :shrug: :grin:

    You are, however, also right in the assumption that I've been around this website for a while (like 7-8 months). I've found this and the Satelliteguys forum both to be very helpful and informative sources. Being a Dish Network customer, I like to know what's going on with my programming provider. It took some research to come upon my answer, and considering your reply, it hopefully means I'm close, right? Well, thanks again for the welcome.

    A great big welcome to TJNicholB :wave: who registered just so he could get in on the fun playing "Know Your Moderators". Something tells me the thought of winning one of those valuable prizes may have had something to do with his decision to sign up at this particular time! :grin:

    He joins over 11,000 other DBSTalk members who come here for the latest DBS news, information and technical help, not to mention all the fun of DBSTalk games, contests and chats.

    Speaking of chats, be on board tomorrow (Monday) night, 8:30 PM CST in the DBSTalk.Com chat room as we collectively watch and kibbitz the DishNetwork Tech Chat airing on Dish channel 101 at 8:00 PM CST. Lots of fun guaranteed, and the DBSTalk dancing girls (wink, wink), who traditionally welcome new supporters the Gold Club, are scheduled make a special appearance during Monday evening's chat. You can bet a wild & wacky time :welcome: will be had by all!


    CONTEST UPDATE: 5:00 PM EST An review of contest entries reveals an interesting coincidence. Over half of our contestants have matched moderator "a" with the same set of quirks and fav flicks. Now, either some of the contestants are playing 'follow the leader', or there's security leak at contest HQ. ;)

    Oh wait...that couldn't be it! That answer is incorrect! :D

    What happens in case of a tie? Is the person who entered the answers first the winner, or is a random drawing kind of thing (I vote for putting the winning names in a pinata, get Mark all liquored up, and then push him towards the target, and then let him swing the broomstick until a name drops out. No, ...wait... too many names might drop out at once. How about we break the tie by height as Chevy Chase wanted to do in Caddyshack? Nah, I'm 6'3" and some would see that as unfair. I know, we all guess the minute during the next Charlie Chat that Charlie uses any of these phrases: "We can't add the ______ channel because we'd have to raise your rates,..", or "there hasn't been any stated interest in the channel by our subscribers", or "there isn't enough compelling content on the _________ HD channel to justify adding it at this time", or when all else fails.... at what minute the lame guest is introduced. Oh wait, D* users are in this too. OK, the winners names go into a bag and Nick picks out the winner. As long as it isn't some liberal commie treehugger. Just kidding.


    Don't mind me.... It's President's Day and I have to work so I'm a little punchy today. Time to go get some caffeine into me.

    Actually, there may be some more clues let loose (not lose) in the DBSTalk chat-chat tonight, in which anyone may view and/or participate. Be sure to join us, starting at 8:30 PM CST, and keep a notepad handy to snag those subtle hints! :confused:

    Here are four new "quirks" or clues to the "Know Your Moderators" contest, taken from DBSTalk forums. The clues were first revealed during the tech chat-chat yesterday (Monday) evening.

    Mod "c" has T6 wireless broadband

    Mod "k" planted tulips in his yard last year

    Mod "g" bought his HDTV at Wal-Mart

    Mod "j" thinks that Dish MPEG-4 DVRs will do both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4

    With less than four days to go in the contest entry period, we have a record 23 qualifying entries with more expected as the entry deadline of Midnight, Sunday 2/27 looms.

    New Clues: in case you missed them on the DBSTalk chat Monday, four new "Quirks" were revealed. The new clues have also been posted in this thread, above.

    Changes: since the new clues were released, five contestants have deemed it prudent to change their answers.

    New entries, new members: We have had three new members register here at DBSTalk just to play the mod contest. Join me in welcoming rudhdogg, TJNicholB, and TulsaOK. We hope they will all become contributing members by sharing their knowledge and wisdom with us all.

    I'm sure I'm way too late and not knowlegible enough to enter a correct answer but have some questions anyway.

    I'm certainly not new to computers but I'm new to message boards and especially this one. I was wondering how this whole moderator/administer thing works. I assume you guys are volunteers and don't get paid for any of this. Right?

    Who pays to maintain the web site and for the bandwidth and all that?

    I ask these questions strickly out of curiosity.

    That's correct. We don't get paid for any of this, but still have a lot of fun anyways in helping to create and maintain one of the best DBS web resources on the Internet. The costs for maintaining the web site and the bandwidth comes from people who contribute to this web site. We'll just skip the message that sounds like a PBS pledge break.

    Yes we are all volunteers. New volunteers or usually recommended by other mods/admins when there is a need.

    As to how the site is payed for. user make donations to pay for the cost of running the site. That is how I understand it.

    Congratulations to TStorms, who was not only the first entry, but the only entry to get all matches correct! He was also the only contestant who changed his answers twice.

    hehe... congrats TStorms!

    Now I'm curious and have a question for the admins... were all the answers available if one delved into the older forum posts, or were some of these clues and quirks pulled out of thin air?

    I know I pointed a few folks (TStorms included - guess you owe me one!) toward Nick's answer. One can even see a picture of his patio if you browse back into the older threads.

    I also knew Mark Holtz', Lamutt's and Chris Blount's answers.

    I didn't enter the contest though because I had no clue on the other admins as I rarely/never talk with any of them.
