With all Sabres games now in HD, is channel 638-1 still needed?

Up until this season, only the Sabres home games were in HD and they were on channel 638-1. The SD feed of all games were on 638. Channel 638 (and 638-1) is only used to show Sabres games. I've never seen any other programming on it. But now this season, all the Sabres games will be in HD (http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=538182), so I'm wondering if channel 638-1 is needed anymore. Is it?

Couldn't they do away with it and treat 638 just like any other HD channel where depending on the receiver it either tunes to the SD version or the HD version? Same as D* did this year with the Sunday Ticket channels.

I sure hope they do this, but I have this fear that many games will be in SD only on D* (due to the Leafs/Habs game in SD only tonight)

They do not do that with any other parttime channel. MASN2 is 100% HD and is parttime. They use 641-1 for the HD. But what difference does it make if they are all in HD, just hide the SD from your favorites list.

I don't understand what you are saying. Do you mean D* won't show the HD feed of some games? Or that MSG won't actually produce some games in HD? Or do you mean something else?

Or are you concerned about Center Ice?

D* does a real good job with the part time RSN HD over flow feeds. They even pick up college football on RSN over flows in HD.

Look at tonight's Sabres road game - SD only, right?

Nope, my guide shows it on both 638 in SD and 638-1 in HD.

In fact the next six Sabres games in HD are already listed in the guide.

because 638/638-1 is only used for games, it will remain to be a -1 because even though all the games will be HD, its not a 24x7 channel.

I didn't realize (or I guess I just forgot) that the -1 also signifies a part time/game only channel. But I also guess that that is not a hard rule since the Sunday Ticket channels lost the -1 this year. It just looks cleaner and is easier to type in a 3 digit channel versus a 5 digit channel, that's why I was wondering about 638-1 being deleted.

ST is not a remap unlike NBA LP / NHL CI / and MLB EI.

I know after last years MSG HD on NHL CI debacle, us Sabres fans are a bit gun shy when the MSG HD feed doesn't appear in the guide. Unless MSG pulls the plug on the HD feeds on NHL CI again, I think we will get any MSG HD feed that is being broadcast.
