Has anyone used the internal HDD from an HR44 as an external? I can't seem to get mine working. The HDD is thinner than regular ones, and doesn't fit tightly into the Thermaltake dock.

You'd have seen the problems right away, you're OK. Also lucky. Most of the problems I've read about are about getting them to be seen by the HRs. Not all of them are bad, I never meant to give that impression.

What make and model is the HDD? Almost sounds like a Seagate Pipeline.

That's exactly what it is. ("1000 GB")

Do I need to shim it? Or something else to get it to be the default startup disk for the HR44-200?

If you take a flashlight and look into the HDD slot on the TT dock you'll see where the HDD is supposed to be plugged into. I don't know if that particular HDD will fit well enough to be used. Even if you do get it plugged in properly, you're gonna have to do some shimming to keep it steady or it will vibrate out of the plug, I would think. Those Pipelines are a PITA. Consider yourself lucky to have been able to put a "normal" sized HDD in the 44.

Yes, the 2 TB drive is working fine, and I am slowly forgetting what it is I wanted to watch on the old drive.

It's really infrequent. But it does happen. With my lack of luck, I try to avoid anything I have any doubts about.

Is there a list anywhere of working setups and the DVRs they work for? I never thought I would ever consider an external drive, but then our Genie got down to 10% left and my wife started deleting my shows to make some space.

As far as all of my reading in this thread goes, I am understanding that I'll need an enclosure that does eSATA and a hard drive to go in the enclosure...is that correct? You can't just buy an "all in one" external hard drive with eSATA?? By all in one I mean like the WD passport I have as a place to back up our photos, music, etc. I have no experience with enclosures.

    Thanks!

The issue with "all in ones" is the most of them dont have active cooling, meaning the don't have fans to air the hot air out. The bigger killer of hard drives is heat. And yes, you need an e-SATA enclosure

    Guys,

We are replacing our old HR-20 on Sun with a Genie. Is there any way I can pull the HD out of the HR-20 and plug it into the Genie as an external HD?

    thx

Sure, but I see no reason why. The HR20 has a 320GB hard drive or perhaps at most 500GB. The Genie has a 1TB drive. You wont be able to see the shows that are recorded on the HR20 on the Genie (OTA are the exception). So if you want to decrease storage on the Genie, then you can install the hard drive as external.

I should have been clearer. I still have programming on the HR20 that I would like to keep :)

Unless you keep the HR20, that stuff is gone... Besides OTA, you can't play shows from the HR20 hard drive directly on the Genie by swapping hard drives.

Just curious, which model is it, the 700 or the 100?

The all in one enclosures aren't the best solution to your problem. We gave up on them a long time ago. Here's a link to a 2TB WD Green drive that I use and here's a link to the dock I use and here's a link to an enclosure that works well if you think you're going to have heat problems with the dock (you're not gonna have heat problems with the dock).

The dock is the easier of the two to hookup. The enclosure cost a little more and works well. I think both will work with 3TB drives, too.

Never ceases to amaze me when someone says that. I had so many of them and not one worked.
