Whatever else happened in this case, it appears that there may have been a gutsy cop first on the scene. From the Milwaukee Journal:

It's not. Shootings are a daily thing. If all of them got put on the news we'd never hear about anything else.

Notice how little coverage this is getting compared to the Colorado shooting.

Yeah... these things tend to spike then go away... the new reporting and media frenzy, not the shootings themselves. I think, unfortunately, those happen with semi-regularity anyway :( just that we don't catch fire in the news except every once in a while for about a week or two.

I think the victims being of a certain religion and race has played a role here. I finally read today the shooter is a former US Army member and Neo Nazi follower.

Also depends on the department involved and how publicity happy they are. Oak Creek seems to be keeping tight-lipped so far.

I think you are seeing things that don't exist. :nono2:

There was plenty of news coverage yesterday and today. The scope of the incident is different.

You're right they're different - one is a hate crime targeted at a minority and the other with more coverage isn't.

Our intern at work is a Sikh. She's out of town right now--I hope she wasn't there.

Not really sure what you're watching, but every time I have gone to the break room this morning, that has been the coverage. Same as Aurora, interviews, press conferences, even the Mayor leading almost a "prayer service" for the Sikh community. It is also in the top news blocks of all the on-line news outlets.

I agree that it will die quickly, but that's only because there were no assualt weapons used. This was just a 9mm hand-gun so there's nothing to really keep it in the news. Just another day in the world me make. We might get an extra day since the guy was a Nazi skin head and an ex-soldier, but that's old hat too. The 2nd "person of interest" might keep it on the radar, but if that doesn't pan out, then that will be it.

FYI, the answer to the original question is simple math, just solve for "X"...

There wasn't much to say about the Wisconsin shooting until the police started releasing details. We didn't have all the cell phone videos of the aftermath and days of securing the apartment of the accused --- and we won't have months and years of trial coverage.

Today the coverage was fairly "good" - but I expect without someone to put on trial the story will fade. The Detroit shootings will fade as people were wounded, not killed (and similar shootings happen all the time in big cities).

Meanwhile the guy who shot Gabby Giffords was back in the news. :(

And just to remind everyone, the guy who shot Gabby Giffords also killed six people, including nine-year-old girl Christina Taylor Green and federal judge John Roll.
