This to me sounds like class action lawsuit. I'd liken it to unauthorized/illegal wiretapping. They have no business knowing what goes on in my living room, let alone my household.

If you agree to it in their terms of service then you are giving them written consent. If you don't agree to it you can't use their service.

So long as they are up front about it, you would always have the option not to sign up.

I wonder how many people already have a TV with a camera looking at them that don't know it.

I have a Sony XBR-65HX929. First thing I did was go through all the menus to turn off all the crap. It was then that I happened upon a setting with a small video window displaying my room. Since this is a "smart" (questionable) TV meant to be connected to the internet... Not saying that anything nefarious is going on now but it could. Easily. With just a software update.

Until I find the camera and attach lightdims (blackout ones) my set isn't connected to the net.

If you do some research, you'll find that Duck Tape is what it was called originally. I heard a news announcer call it Duck Tape one day and thought: "How stupid can he be to misuse a word such as that on a NYC station?" After some research, I felt kinda stupid...

I can't imagine that being legal. Or wanted by the public.

New channel: "Couch Roulette". Randomly selected images from the cameras on people's set top boxes. Most of the time you'll get pictures of people staring at the TV ... sometimes you'll get more interesting pictures. Most of the nude pictures will be stuff you do not want to see.

Nope. Needs an external camera for Skype.

    These "features":
    • Presence
    • Distance Alert
    • Position Control

    Great...
Could all the marketed "smart tv's" have this? [ camera]

The "features" you listed would determine what?

Presence turns it off if nobody is in the room for some period of time.

Distance Alert tells your kid they are sitting too close.

Position Control... does something to settings based on viewer position... don't recall the details.

Still waiting for a TV that cooks my meals, vacuums the carpet, and does my laundry...
