Okay... So I wake up this morning, turn on my TV and notice that the HR20 is dead. I suspend it at night most times, but it is all the way off. I turn it on and am greeted with 'good morning, I am having a hardware failure. Please call D*' So I reboot, it starts download 10B and I am hopefull.... It is getting close to finished, I walk away. I come back, BAM 'good morning, I am having a hardware failure. Please call D*'. I'm trying another re-boot. If this doesn't work, I get the joy of telling my wife and 3 year old that they have lost all of their favorite programs, including all of the Christmas shows that they love to watch... Bad HR20... Bad HR20.

Unplug your HR20 for 5 minutes....just let it sit. Then plug it back in. There's a good chance it will come back for ya.

Wow, sounds like a hardware issue. Not sure a FW update would actually do the damage, I think it was more of the reboot and the HR20 then finding an issue with the hardware.

Still nothing... Putting the call in to D* now.
Might try a little longer than five minutes. I had to leave mine unplugged at least ten minutes once, and then when I plugged it back in it took anoher minute or so to respond.

I'm confused, did you already have 10B downloaded before it crashed? Or did it crash and upon reboot start downloading 10B? I guess what I'm getting at is why you think 10B crashed your HR20. It sounds like a hardware failure not a software failure.

It was trying to download 10b. When I restart it, it tries to download 10B again.

Try hitting the red reset button (next to the access card under the flip panel, lower front right of the HR20.

IMMEDIATELY ....as soon as the first BLUE SCREEN shows up, hit 02468 on your remote ...do this only once...then wait, be very patient and see if it can get the update and "right itself"...be patient

How does that help me? I though all that did was force it to look for an upgrade. It is finding the upgrade fine. It starts the upgrade process. I don't know how far it gets before the hardware failure, but it is downloading it correctly as best as I can see.

You won't know until you try it, will you? How can it hurt...it's not like you have anything to lose. It's just one more thing to try while you are twiddling your thumbs. It does sound like you are really stuck....what does D* say?

D* says error code 799 means that it won't be able to receive any software updates and they are sending me another box. Anyone know any tricks to get it to start w/o trying to download the latest software? I'd like to be able to watch TV while I wait for my new box.

No, not really... If the unit thinks it is "okay" to get the software update, it will try on each reboot.
Note; I am editing the title of your thread to add: Possible Hardware issue.

But I liked mine better :) . You can kill the thread if you'd like. And you're right, it is a hardware issue.

Based on the wait time I had, D* must be getting killed this morning. I am soooo not looking forward to getting my new box up and running... Not to mention all my daughters programs that are lost.... I'd by a SATA drive in a heartbeat if I could backup to it.

Earl, with the 799 error should I attempt to format the drive or am I just hosed and need to wait the three days to get my new box?

From what you described... you are failing before the hard drive even comes into the picture.

The software download doesn't write to the hard drive? It was downloading the update and as best as I can tell got all the way or most of the way through the process.

I had a booting up problem that sounds similar. This morning, I went to turn on the box and there was no response. I hit the RESET button and the blue power light came on for about 30 seconds then would go out. No other response. I unplugged the unit for about 5 minutes, plugged it back in, the blue light came on again, and then went out. NOTHING. The box is completely unresponsive. I can't turn it on or anything. I wonder if this is because of 10b. I don't know b/c I can't turn the box on. As of last nite at 11 pm ET, I still did not have 10b.

It does not write the the hard drive.

The OS/Software is maintain on the on-board flash area of the system.
