I've been out of the CE business for a while now. Do the new CE's have a solution for the conflicts caused by the 1 hour and 1 min shows.

There is no overlap protection or negative padding on the HR2x platform.
Isn't that cute how the networks pull that little 1 or 2 minute trick?

Personally, I avoid shows/networks that pull this trick (ABC seems to be the leader). If they think they can get viewers by causing them to miss the beginning of shows on other networks, they are kidding themselves. Plus, the "extra" 1 or 2 minutes is generally commercials anyway so maybe it's aimed specifically at DVR users?

It's called a second DVR. :)

Yep, it seems to be getting even more prevalent. I noticed it tonight when my tuner switched away from live programming at 9:00 (I was in another room and heard it happen).

My first response was to blame a soft-padding bug :) ... but no, it was an 8:00 recording scheduled for 61 minutes this week overlapping with one at 9:00.

This is more likely to lose me as a viewer, rather than gain my eyeballs for another show, as I'll end up deleting series links for shows that do this.
I posted this in another thread. Because of my work I live in 2 different cities and have comcast in Harrisburg. Yesterday Bones was scheduled to run to 9:01 and I had 2 shows scheduled at 9:00. The new software on the Comcast DVR alerted me that Private Practice would be "clipped" and I would miss a minute of it because it would start late.

Not enough to make me switch to Comcast at home but a nice feature.
On my dvr it lets me start a few minutes early or let it record a few minutes later....it works great IMHO....I had Cablevision and shows would just stop and I couldn't "fine tune" each show

Or a 4th...

There is a time on Monday and Wednesday when all 8 tuners are recording. :D
or 4... :)

But admittedly I only watch shows on 3 of mine.
The Networks screwing up our DVR's is just a bonus for them. The actual reason it is being done, and you can confirm this by looking at the schedule, is actually economic. They are adding the time for extra commercials on highly rated shows and reducing the time for the shows that aren't as highly rated. This way the extra minute is charged at the higher ad rate.

Dollars and Cents... everyone is squeezing blood from the rock these days.
I am one of those that blames the Networks first and foremost, but I feel Directv can EASILY add negative padding. This is obviously my $.02 So take it at face value. I have two DVR's for many reasons and one of them is because of the schedule conflicts but I feel that can be easily remedied with neg. padding. Please bring this to us and just see what people think. I know we have manual record but obviously people like to have the SL's.

Is there a patent that doesn't allow Direct DVR's to do this? (neg. pad.)

Unlikely since DIRECTV owns all of Replay TV's Patents now and has access to TiVo's Patents through 2018
Here's a different question, though it's related to the OP's question. Often, I'll pre-set my HD DVR to record a football game a few days ahead of time if I know I'll be away from home when the game is played. But when I'm gonna be watching the game live, I won't hit the "record" button until all the pre-game stuff is over and kickoff is about to occur.

I did this during last weekend's Baylor-OU game on FSSW, but when I played the game back a day or two later, darned if whole thing wasn't recorded – pre-game and all. Back in the days when I was with E*, the DVR didn't work that way. Will the D* DVR always record an entire program even when you don't start recording until several minutes into the program?
If it's in the buffer, it will keep it. Change the channel, then bak, then hit record. Deletes the pre-game stuff from the buffer and records from where you tuned back in after the channel change.

If you have it in the buffer, yes it will. I understand what you're trying to do, but in most cases, this is a desirable feature.

Might want to check out the discussion below. /steve

Thanks, Jones and waldron. What you're saying makes perfect sense; I should have realized it myself. Sometimes my 50-plus mind just doesn't work as well as it once did.

Oh, and an aside to bwaldron: Good luck to your Red Sox vs the Rays in the ALCS (even though it hurts me to say it). All I can do is paraphrase a famous American World War II general and say: My Yankees shall return!
If you want it to start recording right where you are, just channel up/down.. this will flush the buffer and it will then record from there..

This is why I have two networked HTPC's. I try to record the OTA ATSC stuff to the PC's. The SW I'm running will allow you to pad the recording either way +/-. Non-network shows are for the DVR's.

:D
