Hey,

I'm finally upgrading to a new hd receiver.

I'm picky and want to do the installation myself. I'm comfortable doing so and have done it for friends successfully. I don't want/need an installer to do it for me.

I currently have a Dish 500. I'm in the Midwest and my local area receives both the eastern and western arcs. I want to use the western arc due to obstacles in the way of the eastern satellites.

Am I better off using a 1000.2 or a 1000.4 for the western arc? What's the advantage/disadvantages? Does the .4 get a significantly better signal due to size of the dish? I want to use my 500 mast...do both fit on the 500 mast? Do either require struts?

On Amazon, the .4 is considerably more expensive...about $110 shipped where the .2 is about $75 shipped. Is the additional money worth it?

Both will fit your mast, the only difference the 1000.4 vs the 1000.2 is the size of the dish itself. The difference on the 1000.4 EA vs WA is the lnb assembly (the lnb spacing is different. As far as which WA dish in your area. either will work fine with money being only difference, go with the 1000.2.

I'd go with the 1000.2, there is no appreciable difference in signal for the 1000.4 (2-3 points). Both dishes will fit on the 500 mast, but the .4 would required you adding struts since it's a larger and heavier dish.

The .4 is a better dish. With the way you adjust it you can be a little more accurate with your alignment.The dish is heaver so you will need the strut poles to support it.In the install business we went from the 1000.2 to the 1000.4 back to the 1000.2. No real noticeable differences in signal quality. While the strut poles were kind of a pain it made for a sturdier dish install which I did prefer.If you want a quick install go withe the 1000.2.

Definitely the 1000.4. I really miss them, in my service area (Oregon/Washington/Idaho/Montana/Wyoming) I got on average 10 points higher signal on transponder 21. Most manufactures put 2-sided sandpaper on the mast grip, very windy area and it does help. For a novice installer, just make sure you hit a roof truss or stud, tying into structure will help you more than any equipment design.
Went back to the .2 about 6 months ago B/C of cost. 'Course, I'd rather use a Slimline any day, too bad they're only for the "other guys".
