Ok, all of us have seen the latest DTV announcement about the latest addition of 30 more HD channels starting 8/14. But it also announces that there will be some 1080P movies.

My question is, how will that be decoded? I thought the HR2x boxes could only go to 1080i?

Here is the link on Directv's website, and the quote:

"DIRECTV will also transmit all of its HD programming in the MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding standard, by the end of this month - the first to do so in the industry. All HD programming will also be available in the Dolby Digital audio format, and later this year, DIRECTV will begin offering movies in 1080p, the highest resolution format available for HD video enthusiasts and the same format used by Blu-Ray HD DVDs. "

It will probably be only on new rcvrs that will be built for the new format. IT does say LATER this year. That could be December

There are several more robust threads discussing this already. Search for 1080p.
I did do a search, and nothing popped out, regarding whether or not 1080P movies via DTV would require new STB. Please post the link if you know of something.

The general consensus is that the 1080p content will be 1080p/24 and that the current HD receivers are capable of receiving, decoding, and outputting that format.
