2 Tuners??

Hey,

I'm SUPER new to DIRECTV, so please bear with me.

I have the HR20-700 and I want to record something while watching another program. I'm pretty sure I need to use dual satellite inputs on the back of the unit. My question is, can I just use a splitter, or do I have to PHYSICALLY run 2 cables?

Are there any CHEATS I can do? I'm not too excited about running another cable from the basement up to the living room?

Any ideas would be AMAZING!!!

You physically have to run 2 cables.

You can't use a regular "cable" splitter.
You need to run two lines to the SAT dish, or from a properly setup multiswitch.
Thanks:grin:

I was AFRAID of that!!

I have a multiswitch in the basement, so I guess I'm going to have to figure a way to run a cable!!!

Any specific type of coax I need to buy? I'm in Canada so I don't have access to DIRECTV service to come do it for me
HummBob,
You're looking for RG-6 Cable rated at 3Ghz with "solid copper center conductors". You might want to check your existing single cable there and if it's older or potentially not up to snuff you might consider replacing both cables (you could use the existing one to pull the new ones through as well).

Ok so here's my idea..

I'm in a situation where I only have one wire running from the dish to my unit, but need the two wires for my dual tuner HD DVR.

could i get a zinwell multiswitch and put it right at my outlet before my box, and run them off it? if so, what multiswitch should i get? 6x8 seems a bit excessive :)

Welcome to the forum.
I wanted to do the same thing, BUT the multi-switch requires all four of the dish outputs to be connected to the switch.

Welcome ! Now just don't ask how you simply change back and forth between the two tuners should you get both cables hooked up and working.

bah! i have seen some of the boxes w/ terminators on a bunch of the ends..... those must be the outputs & not inputs, yah?
Yes, those most likely would be the outputs.

Unless they are using a 4x8 multiswitch, with a Single LNB dish (thus they woud only use 2 of the inputs).

Actually, you shouldn't use actuall "terminators" on a multiswitch... caps maybe, but not terminators
