3 Recordings at once? How about 4?

OK, so I just noticed 3 recordings taking place at the same time on my HR21-100! I was recording on one channel from 7:58 - 9:02, on that same channel from 8:58 - 10:02, and then on a separate channel from 7:59 - 9:01.... Between 8:58 and 9:01, there are actually 3 recordings taking place, granted 2 of them happen to be overlapping on the same channel. Is this normal/correct? I have not checked all of the recordings yet to verify that they worked, but this seems like a huge improvement over my older HR10-250 which could not record these overlaps forcing me to change my settings or not record something that I wanted in this situation. I am guessing that if I had overlapped something on the 2nd channel at the same time, I could have actually had 4 simultaneous recordings happening? Can anyone confirm this?

Your DVR is only using 2 tuners at one time. It is not using more than that even describing it the way this have.
If 2 programs overlap on the same channel, only 1 tuner will be used. The only way you're going to hit 3 is if both tuners are recording, and you're downloading something via DOD.

The receiver is only recording 2 things at once but it looks like it is recording 3 or more. You will have the padding on both of the back to back recordings on the same channel. You can make it look like it's recording even more things than that by setting up a recording with a really long padding on it and setting up multiple recordings in that padded section. It is all still only using 1 tuner.
As long as everything is on just two tuners, you can actually have as many as 15 (or more) recordings showing as being in process at one time on any HR2 or R22... 7 on each cahnnel plus one DVR (you could get more if you can find a bunch of shows that are less than 30mins)

The units are simply recording only two feeds, but bookmarking if you will, where all programs will start and stop when selecting any given title for playback...

Overlap is great, and is a major feature as far as I'm concerned over tivo... I no longer loose that second or two it takes to stop and restart recording shows on the same tuners...

This is what I wanted to hear! It is a major improvement over the HR10-250 which would have had a conflict on the overlapping shows and I would not have gotten all of my season passes recorded unless I noticed what was going to happen before the recordings started and changed my padding.

It seems like almost every day that I use the HR2x series dvr's that I notice improvements over the older HR10-250's. I cannot understand anymore why people are so loyal to their Tivo's? The HR2x series are much faster overall (though they are a few years newer), have some great features, and all of mine (3 total) are very reliable - I just wish I would have made the switch sooner!
People are so used to the TiVo interface and can't accept anything else.
When the HR20 series was introduced it wasn't as good as it is now.
And it still has growing pains. Just check the other threads here.

Many people that have many conflicts just get a second unit to solve them.:)

The units are actually recording a separate and independent file on the disk for each playlist item even though the source data stream is the same for all. Proof of this can be observed on the disk usage meter on the playlist screen. Multiple recordings of the same program/channel will use up disk space at the same rate as recording multiple programs from different channels, and deleting each individual playlist item of multiple overlapping recordings frees up the disk space as expected for the given program length. That wouldn't happen if each overlapping playlist item just used one common file.

Wonder why the DirecTivo could never do this.
Better yet, why no Tivos can do it today...
The only way I know to have an HR2x record 3 programs at once is to have the two tuners working at the same time and to be downloading new content from Internet.

Spare me, what are you a paid Directv plant? How many years are we into the HR2x now? Post when the improvement comes that add DLB. Speaking of things Tivos have that HR2xs don't what about MRV? (and I don't want to hear about CE speculation about what MAY be coming).

And as I know it doesn't happen to any of the tivo haters here, maybe you should do a quick search and see how many others have had some issues with blank recordings, audio sync (mine is out of sync on Fox news as I'm typing this) ... need I go on?.

The HR2x's have gotten much better, but they are just now where the tivos were when they were dropped and if Directv had partnered with Tivo to develop the software further instead of giving us this trash for 2 years imagine where we would be now.

Probably the same place that Tivo is with Comcast... In a giant hole...

Sorry, But My HR2X's provide far more features I like than any Tivo... DLB is a nice feature, but no where near as important to me as many other things...

No one is saying there aren't issues for some, but there were for Tivos too... People generally don't seem to want to believe that, but its true... And even more to the point, why is it when Tivo is trying to add only a couple features they screw up the software to the point that people started claiming conspiracy theory... That was absolutly hilarious to me...
There is times I think we all could use a third tuner (fourth tuner is just asking to much).

Seriously, it would be nice if there was a way they could record 2 shows off the satellite and a third off the OTA all at the same time.

Last Thursday night was the first time in many months that I recorded two shows at once. That's because the two hospital shows (Gray's Anatomy and ER) overlapped at 10 pm.I

I've noticed Verizon FiOS ads recently mentioning the ability to record FOUR shows at once.

Interesting, 4 shows at once would be a great feature if it could be on 4 separate channels. I know that they have MRV already as well. I don't remember the details of the MRV, but just being there is all is better then me impatiently waiting for it.

And justlgi, I don't get paid by DTV, but if they are listening and would like to pay for posting some propaganda for them, I am open to negotiations!;) But seriously, I really miss DLB - especially right now during football season - outside of that I am very pleased with my HR2x's.

Verion and some cable companies can record up to four programs at once that are all on different channels... The funniest part of that is that my local cable company has a DVR that does that, and will save up to 20 hours of recording... Thats it!!! ONLY 20 Hours!!!! stupid.... And some places, the 4 can't all be HD... depends on that specific system...

Cause every other improvement over Tivo is worthless because it does not have DLB?

There are plenty of improvements the HR2x series have over the Tivo, including better handling recording conflicts (asks you what to stop if you try to change the channel), faster menus in my experience (Tivo gets horribly slow once you load it up with season passes, etc.), and even more features with MediaShare, Directv2PC, etc.

MRV was never even officially on the Directivos, so that is pointless.

And just think, in a year or so you'll be able to purchase a brand new D* TiVo that probably won't do it either and it will only cost you a small fortune. I'm guessing well over $500. But it will have DLBs, maybe.

Rich
Overlapping recordings on a single tuner is one of my favorite features on the HR2x ... there are just so many features that improved on TiVo, but this to me is the most significant.
