Where is my PBS HD LiL?

If a cable, satellite or telephone company's video services do not include Public Television in their channel lineup, 37 percent of all viewing households surveyed said they would reject such services. That percentage has virtually remained the same throughout the course of APTS' surveys, which began in November 2006.
Erstling continued: "With the advent of digital, the breadth and richness of Public Television programming will only increase. That's why DIRECTV, Verizon and major cable systems like Time Warner, Cox and Comcast are delivering Public Television stations' digital programming to their viewers."
D*'s SD carriage here must be the worst. I watch PBS on my 13in hooked to DTV converter box over my D* feed. Audio and Video are horrible.

What does that poll have to do with your question? Is there another marketing survey that shows how many Americans reject providers for not having PBS in HD?r
Direct correlation? There isn't one. But, it shows that a large number of people want PBS. I want mine in HD. maybe it wouldn't be such a issue if the SD wasn't so poor but it is.

Also, most people that have HD are looking at HD programming. So I'm sure that the same % of HD households would want PBS in HD.

The basic point is that PBS is important. HD is important. Together, they are important too. :)

We have watched several items on PBS and have two SLs for PBS OTA. I think that is more than the SLs we have for NBC right now, actually. :)

Tom

I receive multiple iterations of PBS from two different local PBS statiions in two
different states, plus their digital subchannels, plus the national PBS HD feed.
The programming from the national PBS HD is entirely different from, and in my
opinion, superior to that which is available from regular local PBS broadcasters.

While that would depend on your definition of "large number", it clearly shows that the vast majority don't want it (or don't care).

It's like the old KMart commercial on TV:

"50 million people can't be wrong"

Apparently, they were.

If I had better OTA reception here I would watch more. But I don't, and I don't want to invest a ton in better antenna.

I don't like/agree with all of their programs I know there is a lot of politically charged things that can be said. But there is they actually have some qualify stuff.

I know I'm blessed with my OTA situation. While at a modest distance, I have a clear shot at the towers with very minimal multipath distortion from the mountains that others have. I understand and feel for those who don't get OTA as clearly as I do.

PBS will come, but I don't know when.

Cheers,
Tom

I watch some PBS stuff - Nova is usually pretty good. And obviously with small children we watch Sesame Street, etc. Luckily I have never had to choose providers based solely on PBS availability - it has always been available to me thru the service or off-air in the case of HD.

I would question the validity of the data. A certain percentage of people claim they would do anything if they didn't get everything they want. Where are the data that show that churn rates are up in cablesystems and satellite providers that do not provide PBS?

I really wasn't posting this as a gripe as much as putting the release out there. As someone who likes PBS I found it interesting. Obviously not everyone does.

D*'s release said the rollout would begin this year. So I would suspect that someone will get PBS in HD this year.

I think the point of the study is that they want it enough to say it?

I love the programming on PBS but my local PBS station has taken a great step backwards in terms of HD programming.

I've watched PBS HD (WTTW) in Chicago a couple of times. The problem is it is so bit-starved that with any movement the screen blurs. I'm hoping DirecTV adopts a National PBS HD station, so this problem doesn't happen.

WTTW was much better before they added the 3 Sub Stations.
