Tech Support's retarded... There is a difference. Models are only generated when there is a hardware (or mass release software/phase out) difference.
Well, since I won't have a DTVPal next to a TR-40, I'll probably not know what differences there are. From the DTVPal website, they now look identical, when the original TR-40 was quite different. There always was speculation that the software inside might be different, or the TR-40 might have some built in Dishnetwork advertising. The CSR I just spoke to mentioned something about simplified packaging and documentation, or something like that, but he did repeat the verbiage from the website that said there were no functional differences.
I think Dish just got embarrassed at having announced a $40 converter box and just decided to make a special run of DTVPals and sell them at a loss. Maybe they actually did try and reduce the component costs and eliminated some _future_ capabilities of the DTVPal to come up with the TR-40CRA.
But in any case, I used my two coupons to order two TR-40CRA's. I wonder what the "CRA" means? Funny thing is that the online order page (reached from DTVPal.com) took my information and then refused to process the order. A message on the screen said that they determined that I am a current or former Dishnetwork customer so I would have to call a toll-free number. So I called it, and the CSR had no clue what I was talking about. But he worked through it and put me on hold twice, and 20 minutes later, I had an order for 2 TR-40CRA's for a total of $22.80. Shipping was $8.95 each and $4.90 in sales tax.
I still wonder why, as a Dishnetwork customer, I was stopped from submitting the order online? I sort of expected the CSR to try and upsell me on some more satellite receivers, but he didn't.
