522/625 SD DVR upgrade to 622/722 HD DVR experiences?

The drive in my 522 is dying, so I'm forced into this sooner than I'd naturally want to. Anyway, for those of you who specifically upgraded from an SD DVR to an HD DVR, does Dish make you turn in the old one right when you get the new one? Or, do they let you hold on to the old at all so you have time to watch any saved recordings? (30 days, for example?)

2 weeks.
If the old receiver is to be returned, DISH will send you an empty shipping box for the return. If it is not returned within the specified time, your account is subject to be charged for the receiver, however, I'd be fairly comfortable in saying, that a call or email to DISH CS requesting an extension, would probably be accommodated.
An email would be wiser, then you would have documentation of the approval.
What you could do is add a receiver to your account instead of replace one. You would have to pay an extra lease fee as long as you kept it but you could watch everything then call and deactivate it and send it back.

Excellent idea! :joy: I only get the two weeks if they send me the HD DVR and I install it myself. Unfortunately, I need a new dish for HD, so they said they'll want the old receiver when they bring the new one to install with the new dish hardware.
Shoot, I tried to just add the HD DVR, but they say that I can't have more than 2 DVRs on the same account. (Right now, I have the 522, and my wife has a 625.) Any other ideas?

=> OK, I suppose I could try and *buy* the 522 from them. I'll ask. Be curious how much they charge for it if they would, because it's kind of an old model.
