6 hours since reformat, and I've already had one unplayable

My HR20 had gotten so bad in the last few days, I decided it was time to take drastic measures. Completely resetting the HR20 is a pain, as we had to make sure there were no shows left on it that we wanted to watch, and then I had to jot down the 45 shows in our Prioritizer so I could re-setup the recordings (knowing that it would take me a few days to get it all right, since shows from later in the week wouldn't be in the listings for at least 24 hours). But I went ahead and did it, used the reset and the reformat and came out clean on the other side.

The good news is that the Trick Play/Cruise Control (fancy names for pause, play, instant replay, and 30 sec skip) started working again. For the past few days we've been unable to pause live TV reliably because it wouldn't start playing again unless the channel was changed. So to have that working again was good.

The bad news is that barely 6 hours after reformatting I got my first unwatchable show - a 30 minute Judge Judy episode. The unit had successfully recorded an hour show at 1pm, two 30 minute shows back to back on another channel, and then had recorded an episode of Judge Judy at 3pm. The second episode on the same channel at 3:30 was unplayable.

So frustrating... reset to factory defaults and it only took five recordings before one was unwatchable.

Not to belittle your issue, but isn't Judge Judy considered "unwatchable" all the time?

Hey, I thought we were supposed to reserve judgement around here on other people's viewing habits... :)

Unfortunately, today it's "Judge Judy", tomorrow maybe it's "Heros". And when that happens, the HR20 gets packed into the "go-away" box.
Ok, this morning brought unplayable versions of Daily Show and Colbert Report. I'm getting more unplayable shows since I reformated than before.
Unplayable in what sense...

Keep or Delete...

Or just black screen.

What happens if you FF into the program, does it start?

For the most part, it is a software problem with the unit

But if you are getting worse and worse, then you may be having a hardware level issue.
Out of curiosity what is the thought process on what a reformat is supposed to cure or do? I have seen it recommended in some cases, and some people have had success with it. Just no sure I understand how/what this is making things better in terms of what it might actually be accomplishing.

IF a previous version of software, or an event due to a bug... has done something to the underlying data structure or tables...

In "theory" a reset should reset all those.

But right now, it is just a "last resort" thing to try before calling for a replacement.
