Hi,

I have an install for next week and had a few questions about the 622. Thanks in advance. :)

1. Does the 622 organize recorded shows into folders or does it dump all shows into one big list? Is there a way to organize these folders/lists?

2. When watching a recorded program is there a way to delete the show when it's over or when you are in the middle of watching - without leaving the screen. My HR20 D* has a pop-up that lets you select DELETE or KEEP at the end of a show? Tivo lets you do this with a button on the remote. I had Cablevision and it was a pain to have to find the show in the recorded guide and have to delete it from there.

3. D* takes 3-4 seconds to change from channel to channel - for a full picture to show up on screen (watching the banner is pretty fast). How is the speed of the 622?

4. In the manual I didn't see a way to select the number of shows you want to recrid. On my current box I can select 1, 2, 3 0r 4 shows to keep. How does the 622 handle this?

4. Is there anyway to add additional hard drive space?

1. No. They are all in one list.

2. Yes. You can stop the playback and delete on the next screen or you can delete at the end of the playback.

3. The 622 is fast. Just takes a second or so.

4. Yes. When you set up a timer you can define the number of recordings of that show you want to keep.

4 #2. Not currently. There is a reported feature on the way that allows you to use a external USB drive for additional space. However, there is no way to know when it will become available.

Thanks ChuckA. I just had FIOS installed and their DVR is horrible. It has a small 160gb hd that is recording in mpeg-2. (uses more space than Mpeg-4). The picture was a tad better in HD than D* but a tad worse for SD. Anyway, PQ was not an issue. I thought it would be head and shoulders better and I might get a Tivo series 3 and use it with the FIOS. Tivo wants about 600.00 for the box and 20.00 a month for their guide. Good luck with that Tivo. The 622 has received very good reviews from what I have read. The only thing missing (without using it) seems to be folders which is not a deal breaker. Dish has many more HD channels and perhaps a better DVR. I'll see on Tuesday. How do you like your 622? Is there anything that annoys you about it? I also forgot to ask if the 622 can record two HD channels at the same time. I read that it can't but the salesman said it could. Thanks again.

Unfortunately, all of your recorded shows will appear in one big list. However, you can sort the list in seven different ways: by date, length, alphabetically, movies, series/specials, sports, and protected recordings. It's certainly not as handy as folders, but it's better than nothing.

When watching a recorded program, is there a way to delete the show when it's over or when you are in the middle of watching - without leaving the screen?
It's very easy to delete a recording that you are currently watching. Simply hit "STOP", and a screen will appear with several options, one of them being to delete the recording. This screen will also appear when you reach the end of a recording.

How is the speed of the 622?
It takes a few seconds for channel changes, but this is the case with any DVR due to the time it takes to buffer the channel to the hard drive. Compared to some DVR's I've used, the 622 is actually pretty speedy in most areas. The menus are quite snappy, and the unit is very responsive as a whole.

In the manual I didn't see a way to select the number of shows you want to record. On my current box I can select 1, 2, 3 0r 4 shows to keep. How does the 622 handle this?
Not a problem. When setting up a repeat recording, there is an advanced options menu which allows you to select the maximum number of recorded events (up to 25). This same menu also allows you to pad a recording plus or minus a certain number of minutes. This really comes in handy when recording sporting events.

Is there any way to add additional hard drive space?
Not at the moment, but this feature may be available in the future.

I also forgot to ask if the 622 can record two HD channels at the same time. I read that it can't, but the salesman said it could.
Your salesperson is absolutely correct. In fact, the 622 is capable of recording three HD channles at the same time if you are using an OTA antenna.

How do you like your 622? Is there anything that annoys you about it?
I'm very happy with the 622. So happy, in fact, that I have two of them. The 622 may not be as user friendly as my Replays, but it's way better than my Motorola 6412 (absolute POS!!!). The 622's HD picture quality is excellent, and it has virtually all of the features one could ask for. There are even some neat little extras such as PocketDish and Caller ID. Yes, there are some minor quirks such as occasional lip sync issues, but overall the 622 is a winner. IMHO, you'll be hard pressed to find a better HD satellite DVR at the moment.

Thanks Gwee: I'm glad to hear that you can simply select stop and have the option of deleting a show. The HR20 uses a fast forward button to get to the end of the show for deletion. The fast forward button always stops about 2-3 minutes before the end of the show and then you have to fast forward some more to get to the end. It's a messy interface. The Motorolla box from Fios was the worst. It was super clunky. Example to set recording option you have to click on each item to get into another screen to change that function and then the cursor goes over the done cancel option and you have to move back to the next recording option. It's very fustrating. In its defense channel surfing was lighting fast. I'm talking about using the channel button and having the full picture load. It was about 1 sec. or faster. D* is about 3-4 seconds. But as long as I have a channel banner that is fast I'm OK. I'm making an 18 month commitment if I decide to keep Dish. I have 30 days to decide and was told that all my expenses would be refunded. It sounds like I will be keeping Dish - More HD, better DVR, more movie channels for less money than D* and in house tech people instead of the hacks that D* hires. Thanks again.
