I have a VIP 622 and external hard drive with the same problem that many on this forum have. During playback from the EHD the picture freezes then about 2 minutes later 622 reboots. During the 2 minute freeze time hard drive light continues blinking as if it's talking to the 622, apparently it's not. I've called tech support twice. First call, after two CSR's they finally admitted it's a problem and would forward the ticket to engineering. Second call, a few days later, CSR indicated a fix for the problem would be pushed out within 72 hours (that was last night). Very pleasant CSR offered to wave the $39.99 activation charge since the USB drive/Vip622 didn't work as advertised. I accepted.

I'm not looking for anything free, I just want them to fix the batch of 622's that have issues with USB drives. As it is now I can't watch recorded content from the EHD SD or HD without reboots/Freezes. I can't transfer the programs back to the 622 either. We'll see if the next firmware fixes the problem. Hope it does, but I'm not holding by breath. :)

Specifics: vip622 fw: 512 B/S: 1711RBDD
Thermaltake Max 4 Enclosure
First Drive tried: Seagate 750 GB ST3750640AS SATAII
Second Drive: Western Digital 500 GB SATAII

I had that exact same problem 6 months ago, and after a few firmware updates I randomly tried it, and it worked again....KIND OF. For the most part it still doesn't work and they blame my hard drive (even though the same thing happens on the new one I just plugged in also).

These guys have NEVER shown that they have any idea what is fixed in any given set of fixes, so if anything I'd be disappointed I was given a line the second time instead of an admission that they have no idea what to do.

Skeptical? Me? I've been a Dish subscriber for 12 years. I have reason....

The problem seems to be with Seagate EHDs and and WD EHDs that have USB and eSATA connections on them.

Never having had that problem with Generic EHD cases and 2 WD USB2 only drives that is my best guess.

I had the problem with 3 WD DVR Expanders, 2 Lacie (Seagate Barracuda),
and 2 WD Essentials, none of which had any drive connector on them except
USB. They were all 500GB drives. I've had the problem beginning with
L4.49 -- BUT -- it seems to be fixed with L6.12 for the first time in
six months!

Thanks for the responses. I'm still on 5.12 and patiently waiting for 6.12 to see if it fixes the problem. Both drives work great on computers. I've tried XP and Vista no problems. So it's hard to think the problem is anything but the 622.

Thanks guys.

I would give one simple advise ( as an ex-IT person with 25+ years experience of servers/desktops/workstations/etc support):

- run copy of a huge file ( 5 or 10 GB preferable ) on PC from/to the disk in a USB enclosure.

My Thermaltake X type didn't pass the test :(.

My VIP 622 downloaded L612 last night and all External Hard Drive problems seems to be solved. SD and hd plays correctly without lockups. I can also transfer files from the EHD back to the 622 and delete from the EHD.

Now I don't feel like I'm out $180 bucks! Good job Dish.

Since L612, I've had EHD problems for the first time in a long while.

Previously L449 had fixed all my EHD problems.

(And yes, I am 100% serious.)

They broke that back in February. Six months later and many unhappy people and all the swapping of receivers and that's a "good job"?
Maybe you're kidding? ;)

Strange I bought the cheapest Western Digital drives 500Gb and they always worked fine.

The first problem that I've had with them wasn't the 622 it was that one of the power adapters went bad.

They've always worked fine for playback, slower to find the title and start it playing but then playback is fine FF/FRev & Slo-Mo have been fine. Knock wood I'm not jinxing myself.

I have three WD 750GB Essentials and have not had any of the described problems with my 722. After reading these posts, I find my fingers cramping because I'm keeping them crossed all the time.:D

w5pny,

I'd recommend that you edit your post and remove the serial number. The rest of the information is good, but too much details about the exact serial number may not be a good idea.

Tulsa, I intentionally waited to get a USB drive because when they first launched the EHD feature (about a year or more ago, I don't recall) there were plenty of issues and problems. So about two weeks ago I broke down and bought one thinking they should have it beta tested by now, :) plugged it in and the problems started.

In my case, version 6.12 downloaded and the problem was solved within a week. (hense, Good Job Dish!) Unfortunately many others apparently suffered thru version after version of "it still doesn't work right". For them let me say "Good Job Dish!", sarcastically. :)

Yeah, I was one of them. Dish hasn't done a "good job" on a firmware release in quite a while. I consider a "good job" as a firmware release that actually resolves problems introduced in a prior release and offers a few enhancements. When is the last time that happened?
