I am new to the forum so maybe I am missing the point, however, after being a Dish customer for several years I am ready to upgrade my receiver to support my new HD monitor. From reading the 622 posts for a few weeks it seems like the right product for my use. The hesitation for me on the purchase is reading all the problems everyone seems to be having with the 622. Granted my options are limited with Dish. Perhaps I should wait for the bugs to be worked out? I'm no fan of fighting with customer service agent to get me a box that works. Any thoughts on this dilemma?

It's hard to say. All I can say is that my experience with the unit has been quite positive. I had some minor audio dropouts with the release prior to the current one, but that was fixed and now my 622 isn't giving me any trouble. Other people do seem to be having audio problems, though. If you're very concerned about that, it may be worth holding off until the next software update to see what everyone's experience is.

However, given the fact that the software is always being updated, I don't think there will ever be a time where you can say that there is 0 chance of getting a bad update. The hope is that the software will stabilize over time to minimize the possibility of bugs, but that's the sneaky thing about bugs. They pop up when you don't expect them.

Why did you decide to purchase a new HD at this time? If you wait a while they will get better and cheeper. I'm sure it's because you wanted to enjoy HD NOW. It's the same with your sat receiver. If you really want to enjoy HD you need to upgrade the receiver and the 622, IMO, is great.

I have had the 622 since they first came out. Sure, there have been some problems but nothing that makes me wish I waited. It is worth putting up with the small issues. What you will read here is what people have to say when they are having problems. There have been a few threads about people that love their receivers and have had no, or few, problems but for the most part this forum is for reporting problems and finding work arounds so that most of the content you will read. It does not mean everyone that has a 622 is here writting about their problems. Most 622 users never post here. Just do it NOW!

Since the 622 is only a few months in the market it is not strange to have some minor issues. Have you ever had a computer that didn't give some problems at 1st then once you used it for a while everything worked out. I've been working w/ A/V equipment for 30 yrs and it has always been the same there will be bugs to be worked out. I was 1 of the early ones to have the 942 which was the unit the 622 replaced. When I had it to start with I almost had advanced Tech on speed dial. So in comparison the 522 has been much less trouble. I still speak to the Advance Tech dept on occasion and the CEO resolution team but they work things out pretty well. So you have gotten on to a forum that is a very verbal minority. Don't be scared of the unit from the forums. We are the 5%'s that work on the problems and then some of report them to the big boys for the fixes.

When you read through forums, your more than likely going to see issues, because that's why they come here, when problems arise, they want to see if they are the only one, whether there is a fix or workaround.

Generally the 622 for me is doing very well, its not perfect, hopefully future code updates will continue to improve the stability and functionality of the receiver..

I'll second that... I still have my trusty old 6000u non-DVR, and it has been relatively problem free except for one acknowledged glitch last year that was fixed within a week and the semi-random reboots I now have in the receiver's old age. But I remember reading a lot of horror stories too, just as I have with other receivers.

There's a small number of us in the forum when compared to Dish's actual customer base... and most of the posts here about a specific receiver are questions about a problem, since that is how many of us found the foum in the first place... So while most of the posts you read on here may be 100% accurate in reflecting that particular customer's dissatisfaction with a given product, it may very well not be reflective of most people's experiences.

Kind of like when those Ford vehicles were blowing up... obviously it was true and happening, but also obviously it wasn't happening to most customers.

I definately read the user experiences here before I make a decision... and sometimes I decide I don't want the risk of a problem someone encountered, while other times I figure it was a unique experience for their situation that probably will not happen to me and I roll the dice.

All-in-all I am miles happier with my Dish service than I ever was with Time Warner cable and also compared to my parents' experience with DirecTV service... Dish isn't perfect, but they have treated me way better than other service providers have thus far.

I have leased a 622 for a few months. At this point, with all the bugs I am experiencing, I'm glad I didn't pay $549 for a new one.

For example, I watched (or tried to watch) Jay Leno last night in HD. About once per minute it would skip about a second or two (I was watching it delayed by about 5 minutes from the pause buffer).

Also, if I un-pause it returns to live TV instead of where it left off.

And 2 weeks ago I got a message "Your hard drive is corrupt, press OK to erase all your programs". Fortunately it just seemed to affect my VOD/TV Entertainment partition.

If these bugs continue to remain unresolved. I will probably return the 622 and go back to my 501. HD is just not worth the hassle.

Bottom line - if you must do it, lease it. And be prepared for bugs.

I had a 501 since it came out. There were little bugs that cropped up from time to time. I Got a Panasonic 42" EDTV about a year ago. I held off on getting an HD receiver until the 622 came along. Even with it's little bugs, it is so very much better than the 501! The NBR is fantastic! Here are the other things I like: the ability to tape two different programs at the same time, the ability to make an exception to tape a show one time without deleting a programmed timer for a different show at that time, larger hard drive for more storage time, then there is the picture quality. I absolutely hated to watch shows on the 42" screen with the 501. Now, even the SD programs look much better. The HD content looks fantastic. You would have to pry the 622 from the fingers of my dead body to get it away from me! Even the wife is happy with this receiver! Take the plunge!

I went in the opposite direction of you. I had D* for several years until today and had the 622 installed. No issues so far. I do like HD channels....I find myself typically going to the HD section of the guide to look for programming first when I don't have anything in particular in mind to watch. And, of course, Dish trumps Directv in that area. I can't say PQ is better with HD content. As far as the rest of the SD programming, I don't much care as it is SD afterall. One thing I do miss is the proportional stretch mode my Panasonic plasma offers. I don't think the 622 allows you to let it look to the TV for stretching like my old h10 did but I could be wrong since I'm a newbie.

I had a 501 when they were new. The original shiiped 501s had serious problems. They would work approx a week and then have to be RMA'd. Once they got the bugs out it became a fine DVR and transformed into the 508 & 510.

The 622 I got recently has been much better from the start. OTOH I waited til it was past most teething problems.

It is working fine except for the occasional audio problem which I suspect to be related to my use of the 30 second skip button since it never occurs util after I have used that feature and only occasionally then.

Or to put it another way I could always wait until the best thing comes along, however there is always something on the horizon. I'd rather go for it now and have the use of the 622 then wait and see.
