So what happens when you get hd locals. Are the sd locals that are on 72.5 going to stay there? I have 5 zippered tivo's and use mrv all the time

Thanks
Rick
in your case locals will move to 103, and you will need to get HD DVRs to replace your tivos. it bites, but there is no other option

Ok so when are they going to move ? Has this happened in any location yet ? If it has what has dtv done for cost on replacing tivos?

Am I going to lose my hd feeds out of nyc? That is going to be bad as my local cbs is showing the bills game and not the giants game

You may have a little longer wait than expected. My sources told me D* should have got Syracuse up yesterday. When that didn't happen I sent D* an email. Their response was something to the effect that we were hoping things would be in place for you to get HD locals. Unfortunately things are not ready. We hope to have this fixed sooner than later. They did not give a timetable. I have also been told that bandwidth is an issue. This was news to me, and bad news at that. For example from what I have heard they won't be carrying any additional digital channels from the start. For example no 3-2, 3-3, and no 24-2,-3, & 4. They are just carrying the -1's. According to them, because of bandwidth.

I had a similar question. My area is supposed to get HD locals this week. I currently have two SD Tivos and an HD DVR with DNS. If I switch to locals will I lose the networks on the Tivos?
toadley,

look on the online program guide at d*.com.

Channels 5 and 44 (WPTZ and WFFF) are showing us with HD duplicates this morning.

Yoooooo Hooooo for this week for BTV !!

I was hoping for some clarification on this topic also. I am suppose to get my locals in HD in November. It is my understanding that the SD channels will also be going MPEG-4 and their will be no MPEG-2 signal.. making my old Tivo unable to get locals. Is this a correct understanding? Will DirecTV be contacting me, telling me my old receiver will no longer work?

In those markets where you must have a 72.5 dish to get locals, those will be moving to 99 or 103 over the course of the next several months. You will need a new (mpeg4 capable) receiver in order to receive SD locals after your market converts.

It is my understanding that DirecTV will upgrade your equipment. I believe the R22 is the SD DVR that is capable of receiving the mpeg4 signals. Your legacy receivers will no longer receive them.

As to questions about distant network service (DNS), I believe the NY SD DNS service will continue where and how it is for some time. HD DNS will become mpeg4. Whether or not you will be able to retain DNS is more related to policy than technology, but the trend is to delete it from accounts that have local network service available. If you have HD DNS because of no local HD, and get local HD, you can expect to lose DNS.

Dtv cs told me this today.....Dtivo's can receive sat's 99 and 103 (lol)

My sd locals will be shut down in november 08 that use 72.5 sat

I have 5 zippered dtivo's that we use mrv on alot.

Dtv offered me 1 free hd dvr and 99 a piece to replace my tivos. Not a bad deal as I have 1 now and it works great. However no mrv and that is number 1 important for us.

I have heard mrv coming soon for dtv dvrs any new info

Thanks

"MRV is coming soon" - well that is the popular belief and appears to be supported by indirect evidence, including test software versions (CE software) that continues to improve DVR to PC performance. The final key piece is DVR to DVR, and no one who knows when that might show up is saying. Guesses are all over the board.

My guess (and that is all that it is, a guess), we'll see MRV (at least in CE software) by the end of the year.

Quick Question about 72.5

After our HD locals come on (Toledo) is it OK to disconnect the 72.5 satellite and remove it? I just want to make sure nothing else is coming from that satellite.

Thanks
I am looking for this answer as well. Is it as simple as taking it down and leaving everything alone, or do I have to run setup?

Here in the Augusta GA area, we've had our locals in SD from the 72.5 satellite. HD locals started up last month.

My SD DTivo in the bedroom still brings in the SD locals, so either they've moved the SD locals to one of the other satellites and kept them in MPEG2, or they did not yet shut them down on 72.5.

[Edit: testing signal strength on the DTivo shows it is still using 72.5 for the SD locals.]

Have not heard anything from DTV regarding the need to replace the DTivo to continue local service. Maybe they don't notify you if you ALSO have an MPEG4-capable receiver activated (??). Or maybe the shutdown of 72.5 is far enough out that they are not notifying yet(??).

They are still on 72.5. A cold shutoff would leave plenty of people in the dark for SD locals.

To the others; you can disconnect but I'd redo the setup and wait just a few months to take the dish down.
