I've been trying to figure out what the problem is for weeks now. I really hope someone can help me!

I got an HR21 about a month ago and from the start, I've had this problem where if I set it to 1080i, the picture will start fine, then begin to "sparkle" here and there over the screen in random places.

The sparkle will grow steadily until eventually it covers the screen and looks like this:

[picture attached because of post count]

Here's where it gets weird...If I see the beginnings of the sparkle, and pause - the sparkle will still continue to grow until it consumes the screen.

The same happens with recorded programs.

The issue does not happen in 720p or lower.

It happens on both locals and other HD channels.

It does not happen on DVD or my Xbox 360 (1080p)

I've tried changing my HDMI cable, replaced those little Kband boxes, and tried component.

Is this a hard drive problem since it is happening on recorded shows?

On recorded shows, the sparkles don't always start at the same time, and sometimes not at all...on the same recording.

Maybe it is an interlacing problem, since my progressive scan resolutions seem to work fine?

The TV is a Sammy HLT6176 DLP

My cable run is kind of long - maybe over 100'. Would inline amps help?

..and most of all...does this explanation make sense? I've searched all over and my Google Fu is usually top notch, but I haven't been able to find anything that even remotely sounds like my problem.

Please help...the people that installed were 'difficult', so I'm hesitant to call D*, knowing they will try to send them back out to me.

Here are my transponder readings:

I think 100' feet is way to long for HDMI. Not sure for componenet but i would imagine that would be to long as well.

So it's only appening on recorded programming? Any chance you have another receiver to conect to the TV?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I didn't mean to imply that the HDMI was 100'....it is only about 3'. I meant to write that the line from the dish might be over 100'.

Or are you saying that when you use HDMI, your RG6 shouldn't be that long?

No, it happens on both live tv and recorded shows.

Don't have another HD receiver. :(

Oh....the RG6 at 100 is fine.

Do you have any other devices that can output 1080i ? If the DVD and Xbox can do 1080p and the TV handles it fine you'd think that it would be fine w/ 1080i.

My first guess (only a guess) is the receiver is bad.

Welcome to DBStalk btw. Your signal strength seem to fine for the most part. 103c could be a bit higher but i don't think that would cause this problem.

What a bizarre problem!

And yes, do you have a daughter named Carol Anne?

MonsterJoe, have you received the new software yet, 0x0254/0x0255? We've got to start eliminating causes and that would eliminate one. Press Info and hold, and up on the screen will pop a status report, with one of the items your software version.

I don't know Samsung TVs really well, but don't they require you to select the resolutions they will receive? You do have the 1080i resolution on your TV selected, don't you?

If you are handy, you can probably get DirecTV to send you a new DVR for you to hook up yourself, bypassing the installation folks with whom you had issues. I'd also try a DVR swap because this is such a strange problem and, again, we have to start eliminating things.

Good luck and welcome to the board. Nice first post. :)

The good news, MonsterJoe, is I just looked over on AVS about your TV and no one there has reported this problem with a 1080i source, HD DVD being the most common. Is your set still in warranty if it turns out the problem is with it?

This sounds familiar. My Infocus SP5000 projector does the same thing, with live TV or recorded programming. When I first got my HR 20-100, I "worked" with D, including a service call, and the switch out of my receiver. Nothing worked. So now, my native is off, and I watch in 720p. I changed out all my connections to no avail. My plan is to upgrade my projector later this year....it's beginning to show some age anyway. Anyway, I hope someone can help with your problem. I come here for answers....I'm not smart enough to give answers, lol.

Hmmm. Over on AVS, in the 2007 Samsung HL-Txx76 Owner's Thread, there is this exchange from eleven months ago (here's a link to the posts themselves):

Does anyone have theirs hooked up to a Direct TV HR-20 High Def DVR? What are u using? 720p or 1080i?

I have mine hooked up to the H-20 and set it to native seems to work well although there isn't a lot of
GREAT quality HD programming yet. When I did try 720p vs. 1080i there wasn't a lot to choose one over the other again the programming doesn't take advantage of the sets capabilities.
When taken together with other posts by folks using 1080i upscaling DVD players and Toshiba HD DVD players with 1080i out, I thought compatibility wasn't the problem here. I may be wrong.

Frankly, a compatibility issue was my first instinct. That's why I went searching over on AVS, looking to find a general problem. Not finding one, I dropped it, possibly too soon.

Interesting problem.

Same thing happened with component?
I assume you've tried swapping HDMI inputs on the TV?

Try Native off at 1080i, just for fun.

Can you grab the firmware version on the Sammy and post that too?

Thanks,
Tom

Yep, I just bought it in April...and it's starting to look like it is indeed the TV.

While I have no option to set the resolution, your question had me fiddling around with the TV settings.

Samsung DLPs have an option called "Game Mode" that is supposed to improve video latency...It is used instead of picture settings (Movie, Dynamic, Sports, etc..)

When I clicked on the "Sports" game mode....all the sparkley stuff disappeared and has not come back since.

I'm happy it's the TV because I know my TV repairman and I would rather deal with him than with D.

Thanks for the suggestions, the welcome, and thanks for helping to focus my tinkering!

Yes, same thing with component. I've tried swapping HDMI cables between the Xbox and HR21, switching the inputs on the TV and tried unplugging the Xbox completely.

Native on/off. No difference.

Firmware T-ORCHAUS0-1024. Date: 2008-09-15.

I'm pretty sure I need a firmware update, but for some reason it isn't reading my flash drive with the update that I downloaded from Samsung.
