I have a 1080P Sony TV. The programs that broadcast 720P look better than the programs on 1080I. Is this normal? I have the HR20-700 set on "native.
better depends on the type of programming, 720 refreshes a tiny bit faster so is better for motion (Like sports)

When you say they look “better”, can you define that? Honestly, the average viewer can rarely tell the difference between a 720p and 1080i picture on a decent HDTV. The most common thing is to see some “jaggies” in fast-motion on an interlaced signal, but you’d really have to be looking for it. If you really can tell visible difference, my guess is that something else is at play here, like MPEG compression artifacts or maybe even a connection or cabling issue.

It is not the potential of the resolution or anything, it is the fact that the scalers in some TVs are better with one resolution or another.

The TV is the reason, not the resolution.

I don't think the issue is with the 720 vs. 1080 resolution, but the progressive (p) scan vs. the interlaced (i) design. Progressive scan tends to be better for fast motion, like sports.

I am not a videophile by any means, but I have a couple HDTVs in my house and all of them look great with 1080i and I watch hockey and football a lot. I have tried 720p and I just don't see a performance difference on either of my Samsung tvs.

Physically, doesn't a 1080p set have a finer resolution (grain) than a 720p?
So a 720p set "should" have a coarser look, close up? ....and an upconvet to 1080i has to meld this? I can't tell the difference. Just talking theory.
