Which is considered better, 720p or 1080i when using the H20 and a 1080p television. I want to select one output (either 720p or 1080i) as TV resolution on the H20.
This is a conundrum somewhat peculiar to DirecTV. Their horizontal resolution is always 720i (1280 pixels) while the vertical resolution bounces back and forth between 720 and 1080 pixels (more or less).
Consider also that your TV's scaler may be better or worse at doing its thing than the HR20.
It all comes down to your perception and we can't tell you how that's going to come out. In other words, you're on your own.
What is the matrix configuration of your TV (1366x768, 1920x1080, etc)?
Regrettably, many televisions that claim a "native" mode are actually scaling to display an image formatted for that mode. Only recently have we seen true 1920x1080 capable televisions and IIRC, only Sony makes 1280x720 (720p) televisions.
