721 Pre-Purchase Questions

1110 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Lightnin1
I am looking to purchase a PVR in the next few weeks (508 or 721) and have a few questions.

My current setup is 1 dish 500 with a TWIN LNBF and 2 301 receivers.

1: If I purchase the 721, what kind of switch or new lnbf will I need?

My thought was that I would get a DP34 switch. To this I would hook both outputs from the TWIN lnbf. I would then run two lines to the 721 and 1 to the 301. Will this work?

I would prefer to purchase a switch instead of a new lnbf to avoid climbing up to the roof.

2: To activate a new receiver, all I have to do is call dish, correct?

3: Will my wife kill me for spending so much money on the 721 when it has all sorts of problems? Does the 721 have all sorts of problems?

Thanks for your response. I went back 8 pages and could not find advice for this type of setup. Sorry if these questions have been asked before.

1 - Sorry - ANY scenario for you to add either the 721 or a 501/508 will call for replacing your current LNBF (I'm assuming all other IRD's you have are still active). The DP34 switch will only work with the DishPro TWIN - a totally different beast than the one you currently have. If it was me, I'd replace your Legacy TWIN with a Legacy QUAD LNB and pull the extra 1 or 2 cables to the 50x/721 new location. Don't forget that the 721 will need 2 cables to use both tuners.

2- Correct - get it hooked up, then call Dish to activate.

3 - I don't have one, but what I'm reading on the boards is that the 721 is MUCH better than the 501 was when it was released. There are still a few niggling little things, but it mostly works.

I see the previous post I made was incorrect.

The TWIN lnbf I currently have is DispPro. In that case, the DP34 switch would work, correct?

If you actually have a DIshPro Twin LNB, then yes the DP34 switch would work fine.
A small addition to your post though scooper. It will work IF,

All your coax, connectors, and grounding blocks(if any) between your LNB/Switch/Receiver is swept to at least 2.2 Ghz. If it is not, you will have to replace the whole shootin match.

Have fun
