An example of whats happening:

On the DVR, 40 hours of recorded shows (HD). Delete a HD show of two hours in length. Time available on DVR will read something like 41 1/2 hours available.

Doesn't seem the math is good.

Not at all a problem with the math. Depending on the event recorded, memory use required varies all over the place.

In order to estimate hours, the box must make a guess (assumption) as to the nature of what you might choose to record in the future.
Exactly, OTA HD requires the most disk space, and closely matches the math the receiver uses.

If you record MPEG2 HD off satellite it uses less, and MPEG4 considerably less even.
The Dish counter rely to unreliable data - compression rate; so don't expect to see exact number.
