I'm coming from 5 years with the "other guys" and a Hughes HDVR2 running TiVo so sorry if this sounds basic but I'm so used to doing things that way. My TiVo receiver had 2 SD receivers it. There was a button on the remote, "Live TV" that when you pressed it, swapped between the tuners. This wasn't PIP, but an actual toggle between the two. But I can't seem to find a similar function with the 722. I'm presently doing it via the PIP; swapping it there. Is there a better way?

Also, what happens if you have an HD program scheduled to record, and you're watching a program that overlaps the start time? For satellites, there's only one HD tuner while the 2nd one is SD, is that right?

If you are in Single mode just press the swap button.

If you are in dual mode (2 TV support) it is not possible because tuner 2 is for output # 2 in dual mode. You can change the channel to an OTA channel if you are recording on satellite tuner #1 and vice versa by directly entering the channel or using the menu.

The ViP722 has three tuners (two satellite and one OTA) all capable of recording HD programming.

Nice porn name. :)

Here's what I find weird with Dish, as compared to DirecTV. It appears that when a show is scheduled to record, it is assigned to tuner #1 or #2. Then, when it comes time for the show to get recorded, if you are watching something on that tuner, it switches to the scheduled timer.

On DirecTV, those conflicts seemed to be resolved at record time, and whatever tuner was free would be used. Am I correct?

Base on my experience, 622/722 will show a 2 minute coundown on screen 2 minutes before a scheduled event is to start reccording using the current tuner. I assume that is because the current tuner was pre-assigned the scheduled event.

However, if the other tuner is NOT recording anything and the current tuner is showing live TV, your scheduled event will actually be recorded using the other tuner. So you should be able to continue and watch live TV using current tuner unless both tuners are recording something.

Thanks for the good explanations on that.

Most of the time. I believe it works like this: If you had been interacting with the tuner within a certain amount of time, the scheduled recording would start on the other tuner if it were available. But, if you had been watching live TV, or not interacting with the tuner, then it is possible that it would start the recording on the tuner you were watching even if the other one was idle. You then had to swap tuners to continue watching your program, loosing the buffer that had built up on the other tuner. TiVo could also be set to auto record suggestions based on your ratings of previously viewed shows, so there was frequent recordings going on. Tuner "collisions" weren't uncommon.

In my case, it always switches over, even if the other tuner is idle. Is there a setting I need to switch to have it respond in the way you have described?

The tuner is selected when you set up the recording. The only way it would change is if a priority recording was added later. And that would stop the recording for that episode!

If you want to watch what's recording on TV2, then press the PVR button twice and select it from the list of shows.

By default, when set to two TV's, it will use TV2 first to record from so you can watch what you want on TV1. It will only use TV1 to record on if there is a conflict and it needs to resolve it.

In Dual mode, that depends on your Record Plus setting. It can be set to default to either TV1 or TV2.

It defaults to the tuner used by the TV from which the timer was set.

Hmm... After reading Hardin's post about interacting with tunner, I guess I may not have been completely correct about how 622/722 select tunner for recording. I recall that whenever I see a 2 minute count down I usually just press cancel or something else to make the count down disappear from the screen without skipping the recording. This interaction with the currently viewed tuner may be what forces 622/722 to use the other tuner if available.

I've done that too, but it still records on the tuner you have set up as your default. Be careful what you click when the bubble pops up, you may be cancelling the timer.
