Check out this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/DISH-NETWORK-PV...6QQihZ018QQcategoryZ67893QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

WOW!! Does anyone know why some of these are bringing such astronomical amounts? I have one that sold last week that the buyer backed out of that only brought $256. I see nothing special that makes certain ones so attractive. I am very naive about the "hacker" community, but I am assuming that they are latching on to certain card revisions. I'd really like mine to sell that well when I relist it. Any ideas?

Interesting. I sold my 921 on ebay in March for about $220. I sold a 942 on ebay last week for $310. Either the bidder didn't know what they were doing or there's something about that revision that's attractive to hackers (as you surmised).

The dude who won it.. looks like he made that bid on Oct 22nd...

After that... looks like (from the bid history) .. people were bidding up until Oct 26 (when action closed i guess) but the Oct 22nd bid stood...

Likewise I sold my 6000 for $536 in early August. I was blown away. It sat right around $200 for most of the week and then the bidding exploded. I think it went to Canada via Washington. In my case, it paid me back for the $150 that I originally paid for the 6000 and it paid the $299 upgrade to a 622. Sure seemed better than the $25 dish offered me on a trade in.

Yeah, as I mentioned above, I sold my 942 for $310 a couple of weeks ago so obviously I wasn't going to give it to Dish for $100. The hard drive alone should be worth $100.

Ya.. but didn't any of us spent like HUGE amounts of dollars on our 921s in not that far past ;)

That's life i guess.. things get cheaper and cheaper.. and eventually useless...
Someone paid for them though .. at one point or another ;)

But ya.. some of them on Ebay are just suckers.. and a new one is born every day...
Others, though, i guess live under a motto: "Enjoy it while it lasts" :D

The guy who bought mine and then backed out was from Canada as well. He claimed that my smartcard version "no longer worked" in Canada. He was bringing it in from a Michigan address he was going to have me ship it to. I assume that they can't legally get Dish in Canada and they are hacking the cards to receive programming. Has Dish zapped certain card versions so that they "no longer work" and the hackers can't use them? Seems like the Canadians are the one's bidding these up. Probably most of them are ending up there eventually.

Any E* reciver will work in Canada if they have a legit account with a U.S. address. The cards that "don't work in Canada" don't work anywhere for the purpose they wanted it for (namely hacking).

I would guess that Dish Network receivers will work with BEV without modification. As for those in the GWN (Great White North) receiving Dish Network, thats a no-no.

That would be a wrong guess...
The serial number of the receiver is forever etched as belonging to either Dish Network or Bell Expressvue. Never both and not possible to switch. I don't even know if there is a 921 equivelent receiver for BEV. The digital OTA feature would not get much use up there unless they were in Toronto or just over the border from a U.S. city with digital locals. Canada is moving at a snail's pace on getting their OTA signals into the digital age.

The only way a 921 will work in Canada is if the user either has a false address in the U.S.A. or can hack the receiver. :nono: While both methods are wrong, at least with a fake address the user is a paying customer.
