$99 install fee if I buy DVR at Best Buy?

I called D* regarding adding a DVR to one of my other rooms. I was already aware of the $99 down payment for the lease of the box. However, they told me that there's a $19.95 s/h fee and installation is included. So I asked if I purchased the DVR at Best Buy do I still have to pay the $19.95. He said that you don't pay the s/h but you have to pay a $99 installation fee since I need the 2nd line for DVR to be run to that room. First time I had heard of that but I'm a D* newb anyways. I didn't fight the guy because he gave me free Superfan so I figure someone here can enlighten me. Thanks

Fot the twenty bucks I would let them ship and install it. They will run the necessary coax.
I agree. I just thought they'd install if I bought it at BB anyways. I thought that the $19.95 was literally just packing and shipping the unit. I figured I'd eat the gas and go myself. Was I wrong? FYI, I have the protection plan if that applies.
DirecTV does silly stuff like that.

About 6-10 months ago I wanted to add a new HD DVR with wiring and everything. I went to costco and put down $300 for the unit.. Then called and found out I would have to paid $199 for install for it.. After talking for awhile they told me they could get me the UNIT + Install for only $99.00. Took back the unit to costco, got $300 back, paid $100 for install and had a new unit.

And what deal you may get from one rep could be entirely different from another. My suggestion is $20 aint bad.
If you could run the line yourself, then you would not need to pay the $99 installation fee for the receiver you lease at a retail store like Best Buy. If you can’t do it yourself, maybe you have a buddy that could help for the cost of a six-pack (consumed *after* the install, of course).
If D* gives you the DVR receiver for $99 plus $20 ship and install, take it, no brainer.

HR21 at BB is $169 and a HR22 is $199. Then you still need install. Do the math.

He might be talking about a SD-DVR as no where in his post does he say HD and in that case they are indeed $99 at BB.

I think many of us, myself included, have forgotten SD still is being used:)
I always love when I show up to a customers house and they need a dvr 2nd line. I usually ask them were they got the receiver and if it is something like BB or CC I tell them they need to call up and get an upgrade. The protection plan does not cover running a 2nd line. Sometimes I just go ahead and run the line if it is going to be an easy run.

Yeah I have 2 regular TV's that I don't plan on upgrading soon so I need the $99 SD-DVR. I just wanted to know if it's legit that they charge $99 install which happens to be the same cost as the DVR box itself.

$99 is the usual charge for installation regardless of the receiver.

negative. 80 for standard rcvr install, and 99 for advanced rcvr

Thanks for the correction, Curt. I've only ever ordered "advanced" receivers. Then quoted $99 installation on a $199 HD-DVR
So the lesson learned is never buy a D* receiver outside of D* unless you get a deal greater than $99 or you can install it yourself (already had DVR and going from SD to HD).

The receivers from the "big box" retailers are intended for existing customers who can do their own installs. Otherwise, you should go through DirecTV.
