A simple tool to see if you have the right HD DISH

For 95% of you, this is a non issue as you guys are very tech savvy. But for most customers who aren't interested in how this stuff works, here's a simple tool.

Go to channel 480. If you get an onscreen message that starts with "CORRECT HD DISH SETUP...."

Then you have the correct HD dish. Doesn't guarantee the alignment is perfect, but for customers that don't know what kind of dish they have on their roof, it's a simple tool.

To see MPEG4 programming, you need the correct HD dish.

If you see "channel not available" or searching for satellite, then you may need a new dish (or potentially your box has it setup at 3 LNB instead of 5 LNB...that can be changed with the internal settings).

Only run this test on a HD receiver as a SD receiver will obviously not be able to see it.

Hopefully this helps some folks

Thanks Satelliteracer! This will help a lot for the average customer of DIRECTV and when we are trying to help members.
The customer has to know about it first tho. This obviously is a good tool for the CSR over the phone w/ the customer.
I already knew that I have the 5LNB but I checked anyways.
I'll try when I get home. Funny thing tho, the info screen under the setup menu says I have a slimeline 5 LNB when I have the side car.

Both see the same stuff though, so there really is no difference.

The sidecar is a 5 lnb as well ;)

Customers are, in fact, being told about this in some communications...but your point is very valid.
Thanks for the tip Satelliteracer. Now i know i have the Correct HD Dish setup.
Thanks for the tip Satelliteracer & for all you do :)

I am also getting similar responses on channel 481, 482, & 483.
On 482 &483 103 is being replaced by 99 B-Band odd & even :)
Is this test valid with SWM modules (no BBC's)?

Yes. I have tested units on my SWM and units connected to my WB68 and both work. This test just lets you know that you have the correct dish.
Since I'm new to D* (well one year, but 3 months on HD), anyone care to decipher for me?

on ch 480 it says:

"103 B-band Odd (13V)"

Thanks,

The message is unnecessarily obscure. It could be taken as an observation that the HD setup is correct or as an instruction that you should make some sort of correction to your HD setup.

Stuart - Thanks for the screen image, that's what I see. But how does one decipher that and come up with the correct installation? Sorry for the newbie questions, just trying to educate myself...

Thanks,

The back half of the message is for the installers only. The messages have character limitations so the front half was changed.

Essentially, if you see "Correct HD Dish Setup...." you're good to go. Don't worry about the other language behind it. This is a test channel for installers that was manipulated it could be used by customers as well. It's supposed to be obscure.
