Is it just in Reno, or does ABC not broadcast HD with 5.1? I would assume it was just KOLO Reno, but I have noticed that while the other nets say "Available in HD and 5.1" ABC only says "Available in HD."

ABC is indeed in 5.1. Your local afflitiate may not be however. We actually have 2 ABC's in my market and for years one did 5.1 and the other didn't. Just all depends on if the station has spent the money on the proper equipment.

Do note however that 5.1 will only be on certain prime time shows and sports. It's not all the time.

I realized that the only thing I ever watch on ABC is Lost. If anything should be in 5.1, it should!

That depends on the affiliate. My local ABC affiliate broadcasts in DD 5.1 24/7. Obviously it's really only 2.0 most of the time, but you can't tell that just by looking at the receiver.

I think you are mistaken. I have a 6.1 system. Every DD 5.1 program on my HD DVR shows up as DD EX on my reciever. Also, my xbox 360 and DVD player say DD EX on my reciever, even though they output a 5.1 signal. I have a button that checks the audio channels and it always says 3/2.1, 3 front, 2 back and 1 subwoofer. This is how I know the programs, games and movies are all 5.1 (also it usually says it at the start of a program or on the media case). You might have a similar reciever that always shows DD EX. T I don't have any 6.1 content to test on my reciever but with DD 5.1, I always get audio from 6 speakers and the subwoofer. Since programs are in 5.1, the extra channel is not a real distinct channel like the rest. My reciever makes up the 6th channel out of the two regular rear channels. This might be the reason why you think the audio is in DD EX 6.1.

I'm also in Reno and I can verify that they do NOT broadcast in 5.1. I remember this distinctly from Monday Night Football last year. Also...I believe they are having an audio problem on their feed this evening. It is stuttering badly.

By the way...did you watch the local news on KRNV tonight? It was the first night they were broadcasting in HD. Apparently there are only 15 other locals broadcasting in HD in the nation so for us to have one is phenomenal! I used to work at KRNV when we had crappy equipment and the worst control room ever! Now it looks professional for once!!! lol

Yeah, the number is amazingly small. We just got our first HD newscast here in Detroit last month. One of the other stations started stretching their 4:3 newscasts to 16:9 back in June, and advertising it like it was something amazing and awesome. Now that one of their competitors is doing actual HD, they just look even stupider than before.

I'll have to check that out. I generally get all news from Internet or KKOH. TV news is generally on when east coast hockey games are on (ie. the Islanders) so the TV is busy at that time.:)

ABC, CBS and NBC all broadcast in DD5.1, but it depends on your local affiliate's equipment whether you're going to receive it in DD5.1.

In San Diego, several years ago, the CBS affiliate was the first broadcaster to broadcast an HD signal, but in stereo. Other stations later started broadcasting in HD but with DD5.1. The CBS affiliate eventually started broadcasting in DD5.1, but only after they purchased additional equipment to enable them to broadcast the DD5.1 signal.

BTW, DD5.1 is part of the original specification for broadcast HD signals.
