Noticed some of my channels were coming in pixelated. Not on any local channels just the satellite ones. Then intermittent messages appearing telling me DTV was trying to find a satellite signal. Then screen turned blank and a message showed up acquiring guide data. The screen said if nothing happened in 2 minutes try resetting the DVR. I did but it still just keeps trying to acquire guide data.

Now I can't go anywhere on my TV. The only thing that works is my List, which allows me to play shows I have recorded but I can't even get my local channels now.

Tried calling the 1-800 number in entering in the code 771, but the voice menu thing was no help, just keeps asking me to do things I've already tried. We are not having bad weather here, just a little windy but nothing to brag about. Any thoughts. I've already tried resetting the box several times to no avail.

I should note that the standard receiver in the bedroom seems to be working fine, icluding having the guide data that my DVR cant seem to find.

Just got off the phone with Tech Support. Seems I have a couple of things going on, neither of which they were able to do anything to help me with, so they set up a service call. Of course, being the start of a holiday weekend, I was told not to start looking for a service tech until at least Tuesday. The CSR told me it may take longer if there is a natural disaster. HUH? He didn't go into detail but I'm hoping he meant in my local area, not necessarily world wide, but I'll be monitoring the news channels, just not via DirecTV. Thankfully I still have the Internet to keep me abreast of world events.

My receiver just did the same thing tonight, I wonder if there is something going on causing this. HR-21 100 about 1.5-2 years old. Kids said started acting up 3-4 days ago. Reset receiver then had trouble receiving sat signal then it hangs on acquiring guide data reset after two min if it does not download. Tue they come out to look at it. My Hr-23-700 is fine.

Will appreciate if someone could tell me which transponder from sat 101 is used to download guide data,thanks in advance
I do not have that answer, but if you have a 5 LNB, then the guide data can come from 101 or 110, depending on to which channel you are tuned. If you are watching anything that is on the 103 satellite, then the guide data comes from 110, because a receiver connected to a 5 LNB cannot see 101 and 103 at the same time.

When I had 771 errors, it was because I had lost LOS to 110. My ultimate solution was to replace the 5 LNB with a 3 LNB (since there is nothing I need on 119, and the only thing on 110 is the guide data). My temporary workaround was to always switch to a SD channel when I was not actually watching anything. I used 230, but any channel that comes from 101 will work.

You're mistaken.
110 doesn't carry any guide data.
The stacking plan is:
101 & 99, and 110/119 & 103.
The SL3 keeps the 101 active all the time.

Perhaps the mapping help you ?
Code:
{W101.0, L mapped to W101.0, tpn 32}
{W101.0, R mapped to W101.0, tpn 27}
{ W95.0, H mapped to  W95.0, tpn  7}

{W119.0, L mapped to W119.0, tpn 22}
{W119.0, R mapped to W119.0, tpn 27}
{ W72.5, L mapped to  W72.5, tpn 24}
{ W72.5, R mapped to  W72.5, tpn 11}
{ W99.2, L mapped to W101.0, tpn 32}

{W102.8, R mapped to W101.0, tpn 27} SL3
So to summarize (ignoring 72.5 of course) this list means that guide data comes from tps. 27 and 32 for 101W, 22 and 27 for 110/119W, and 7 for 95W?

And I assume the Ka-band satellite mappings are repeated four times this way to account for L/R Ka-hi and lo?

I know the SL3 keeps 101 active all the time, but I thought the SL5 did not.

When I had the SL5, I had a lot of 771 errors. I was told (perhaps incorrectly) it was because I had lost LOS to 110, and that guide data came from 110 when programing came from 103. Has that changed, or was it never true in the first place?

Since I switched to a SL3, I have not had a problem with "guide has not been updated in last x hours".

Unless I am forgetting (I don't think I am), it has always been the 119 for the SL5. If you think about the problems you had, it makes sense. 119 would be further west and much lower on the horizon in N.C than the 101.

No guide data always simulcast from the 101 and 119 Ku satellites. If you have a SL-3 regular or SWiM type LNB it always gets the data from 101 regardless of what satellite position its tuned to.

If you have a regular SL-5, it gets the guide data from either 101 for the 101 and 99 satellites or 119 for the 110,119, and 103 satellites.

If you have a SL-5 SWiM LNB, it gets guide info. from 101 all the time too.

When you were having 771 errors it was probably because you had a regular SL-5 LNB with LOS to 119 blocked through an obstruction. And this was likely before DIRECTV created the specific "950" error message for this specific problem.

That makes sense. I had a SL-5, and LOS to both 110 and 119 was marginal. 119 is only 30.9 deg above the horizon, and we have a lot of tall loblolly pines and tulip poplars in the path. I knew that my workaround was to always switch to channel 230, which I knew came from 101, before I turned off the TV, and I had no problems.
