Activate an HR10-250?

The latest thread seemingly related to this was in 2007, so I thought I'd ask for updated info: Can I still activate a HR10-250? It's coming from a friend's account and has been deactivated for some time. His account is still active with DirecTV, so I'm fairly certain he hasn't stuck them with a high bill. Assuming I can activate it, do I have to pay the HD access fee? (I'm figuring yes, but it can't hurt to ask)

Lest anyone think I'm nuts, I'm only getting it to record OTA HD to tide me over until the shiny new DirecTiVo launches. It was either that, or buy a couple USB tuners (or a HDhomerun) for my Vista-running laptop and a media center extender. This way, I can simply record antenna HD and keep my existing SD programming from the satellite until the new kit launches. :D My apartment faces north (so no dish of my own), and the wife and kid don't want to switch to the HR2x boxes that work with the SWM system (well, neither do I, really, but I would put up with it for my TV if they could keep their DirecTiVos), so this is an acceptable solution if it works.

Thanks for all the help!

As far as I know you should be able to.Now don't know if DirecTV will want you to buy another access card for $20. or not you will have to call DirecTV.

Well in my case I had to buy a new card for my HR10-250 for $20.
