I know I had seen something posted recently about adding one or more SATA devices to the HR-20 700, but I assume this can be AFTER the unit has been on and operating? A friend had told me the old Tivo that allowed a user to add a HDD had to do so BEFORE turning the unit on for the unit to see the extra HDD and that both HDDs could be used together.

Is this the same with the HR-20 or can one or more SATA drives be added at any time? Also, I recall seeing that if one or more SATA drives are added, the internal drive will be 'electronically' removed from the system and won't be used by the HR-20. Am I correct?

Thanks in advance for setting me straight.

At this point you can "replace" the internal drive merely by installing an external eSATA drive at any time. You will lose access to any recordings and the todo list, and the scheduler data--until the external drive is unplugged. Unlike the Tivo, the HR20 does not store any software information on the drive so the drive needs no preparation ahead of time. (Just be formattable.)

For more, deeper information check the information subforum and specifically the thread on eSATA drives: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=66201

Tom
