The nomination of Jonathan Adelstein to become the fifth commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission is a step closer to going before the full Senate for a vote.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may still block the nomination, among others, until he gets his nominee on the Federal Election Commission.

OTHER NOTES: According to the latest FCC data, high-speed connections to the Internet increased 33 percent during the second half of 2001, taking the total broadband count to 12.8 million. DSL subscribership increased by 47 percent during the last six months of 2001, while high-speed cable service jumped to 7.1 million.

As for satellite broadband and fixed wireless services, subscribership jumped from 112,405 reported in December 2000 to 212,610 as of December 2002.
