This morning on the radio there was talk of a possable movie out of Adelphia from the Buffalo area. I wonder what cable company will come in if this happens. Maybe Charter, or ATT Broadband, I hope its not Comcast! I dont think TW will take over the Adelphia areas.

With the soggy economy continuing for at least another year, Dish Network continuing to loose $100 of millions per year and Ergens own admission of the DBS industry peaking out about two years ago, I wonder if we will be reading this headline about Echostar in the future ?

If the merger fails and DTV is picked up by a powerhouse corporation, Echostar may face problems that they can never recover from. I think that is why Ergen is so hungry for the merger to happen.

That is not continuing though. Most analysts predict a small profit for the year of 2002 (although the range of predictions is all over the map from a small loss to a larger profit).

People have been saying the same since before they launched their first satellite and such talk increased when Murdoch backed out of the merge in '97(? wow, was that actually 5 years ago?). While they have lost a ton of money since inception, if you take a look at sequential 10Q's you will see the trend going in the right direction. At least two of these 10Q's included periods of small profits. Most of the losses last qtr were due to one time non recurring write offs in Starband. Profits will do nothing but grow for the near future (what else could they do?).

Most analysts that I have read disagree and feel that Echostar will be the stronger of the two if the merger does not happen. I also doubt very much that GM will allow GMH to be sold to anyone else at anywhere near current market levels, and who knows how long the current stock market conditions will go on. DirecTv is locked into the Dish merger, otherwise I am sure they would try to wiggle out at these levels. The only way the proposed merger won't happen is if the Gov't refuses to approve. While I gave approval only about a 40% chance of happening a couple of months ago, I think the chances have improved recently and give it about a 60-70% chance today (still not certain by any means). I have a feeling though that after this evening's news on WorldCom that the confidence in the market will not be good for quite some time to come and Echostar may get wounded still more by association for the short term.
