Advice on selling an HR20

1175 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  harsh
I've got an HR20 that D* sent me as a replacement under the Advanced Protection Plan, but it got lost in the shuffle of their mistakes and it doesn't need to go back. It has a new access card with it. Can I sell that on ebay? I don't think that D* shows it as owned by me, but I'm concerned that someone would get some flak when they activated it. Thoughts?

I thought all HR20's were leased. Just because it got lost in the shuffle someplace doesn't mean you own it. How hard have you tried to get it "unlost"?

As for someone else trying to activate it, I don't know.

A new owner may very well have problems activating a "lost" DVR. I've heard it sometimes takes a few months for DirecTV's billing systems to catch up with "lost" equipment, so you might still want to hang on to it for a while.

Just FYI, all HR20's are not leased, you can purchase them out right, either from D* or from any store that carries them...
When I upgraded and was activating my 2, they even asked if I wanted to lease or purchase.

As far as the OP, I wouldn't suggest trying to sale it on eBay - it may come back to bite you in the ars. :)
If it works, hang on to it, and keep it as a "back up" until things are rock solid, then maybe try to move it.
Great advice. Thanks, all. I'll keep it for a while.

The only way you own it is if you paid DirecTV $749 for it. If you paid anything between $0 up to $299, then it's leased. You cannot sell leased equipment. If in doubt ask DirecTV access card dept if your unsure.

newcs... is correct! I just did a lot of reading here, and this information is correct.
It's all a little wacky, and somewhat confusing... even Earl said in another post they should use a different word then "lease" in certain circumstances. B/c even if you pay $749, you still pay a leasing fee... go figure.
Anyway, either hold on to it for a back up, or return it, but make sure you check your bill carefully each month - if they "find" this unit missing, they will charge you.

good luck

More importantly, they may ding you $150 if you dont' activate it within 30 days.
