All Recordings Deleted – Is an Update the Reason?

On 09/21 I got a message that said:

We've updated your receiver with new features:
One touch record
Focus your guide on HD...
Improved speed...
Game search...

A few minutes later I went to my list and everything recorded and set to record was gone. Basically, all my settings went back to the out-of-the box settings. Is the update the problem and if so, is this a normal occurrence? It only happened on one HD DVR and not the other (the other never got the update message). I called D* and of course they said they never heard of anything like that ever happening. I've only been a customer for five weeks now and stuff like this happening isn’t making me happy.

Are you running off an External SATA Drive? If so you may have reverted to the internal.

Do a Menu reset restart and see if that clears it.
Nope, just the internal. Reset didn't work. Thanks.
This is not normal and definitely should not of happened...

Hold down the info button on your remote for three seconds... The last line of that screen says "Past Upgrade". What is the version number you have there?
0x255, Wed. 8/13. So it sounds like you're saying there was no upgrade on 9/21? By the way, 8/13 is the date I was installed as a new customer.

Yep. Doesn't sound like you upgraded to any new version. It almost sounds like your receiver "freaked" and re-initiated itself. Did you have any power blips that you know of?
It happened again last weekend but this time I only lost about six recordings. Tech support at D* said it sounds like a software problem is causing a memory dump. The first time it was a complete dump, the second time only a partial dump. He gave no solutions except to do a total reset but that would mean losing everything else I have recorded. If it keeps doing I'll have no choice but to try it.
You could try forcing a download of the current software to reinstall it and hopefully correct whatever is causing your unit to glitch without doing a complete reset. But even this could be risky and delete recordings that are bad or reformat the unit if there is a disk problem.
These boxes have their issues with software, but yours sounds more like a drive going bad. If something major gets corrupted, the disk will reformat itself to recover.
The same thing happened to me. I turned on my HR-20 and all of my recordings were gone, even my series links! Just got off the phone with technical support, and they were clueless. I for one can't wait for the new hi-def Tivo units to come out.
I find it weird and agree with you that the CSR's are sometimes clueless.
But why is that? Isn't it their job to know more than the average user?
