Merry Christmas to everyone.

Just a quick question, has anyone tried any other gaming adapters other than the Linksys WGA54G with the HR20 for the Viiv features? I missed the sale from Best Buy and was considering the D-Link DGL-3420, CCity has them on sale for $79.99.

Thanks for any comments...

Try the Dlink DWL-G820 Bridge Adapter. Great bargain if you use google checkout at Buy.com.

Works perfectly through multiple computers on my wireless network.

Is there an alternative that can use WPA/WPA2?

The DLink DWL-G820 Wireless Gaming Adaptor Product Specs read:
Security • 64/128/152-bit WEP
• WPA - Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA-TKIP and WPA-PSK)

WPA2 is AES, right? Is WPA-TKIP and WPA-PSK=WPA2? I know AES utilizes WEP also.

Regarding the DLink DWL-G820. I have used it for 4 months with a Slingbox, and it has been flawless. It does in fact have WPA-PSK, as that is what I run. When used with a DLInk "Super G" router, it does utilize the proprietary speed boosts (claimed up to 108Mbps). It also works fine though with standard 802.11G - you dont have to use "Super G" extensions. I have had spotty success with some other DLink products, so was a little skeptical, but they got this one right.

btw. WPA-PSK is just "Pre Shared Key", rather than having to have the security server on the network. Instead, you just have a pre-assigned password the clients use to connect.

Probably a stupid question -

Will the above listed wireless gaming adapters work with simple access points? I have a couple of WAP54Gs. Any areas of concern I should be aware of?

You shouldn't have any trouble with this. An "Access Point" is also a router (in the true sense), but the word "router" has become synonymous with the term "firewall" as marketers have tried to bundle products. An "Access Point" is considered a router with the firewall function turned off.

Current terms used by network company marketers

ROUTER = router with a firewall turned on

ACCESS POINT = router with a firewall turned off

Both of these devices can find a use in your home depending on the circumstance. I have two routers in my house, but I only want to have a firewall connected between me and the Internet. The firewall router is hard-wired and my access-point is wireless. If I had a firewall on my wireless router, then it would cause connection problems between the computers in my house.

I use the ZyXEL P-330WC in bridge mode. Compusa has it for $39.
I purchased one of these yesterday and it doesn't hold it's connection for more than 10 minutes without needing to be rebooted, seems to be an issue with this Router/Bridge from my research but I still gave it a go for $35 after rebate. I was using it in bridge mode. I'm am going to exchange it today and give it one more chance.

The WGA54G is HORRIBLE! I have one and don't use it anymore because of the trouble it takes to get it working. It will work fine if you do not want to try and use WEP, non-DHCP, non SSID broadcast etc. Plug and play will work easy, but that's just stupid =)

It took me 2 hours to get it to work right with my WRT54G router, a very stable router by Linksys as well. Mind you, my core skills are networking and I have spent many a day configuring and deploying cisco wireless networks..

Buyer Beware on this one.

I returned this model back to BB after I couldn't get it working with my WEP setup. Hopefully the Buffalo AirStation (WLI-TX4-G54HP) I have coming works better, or I'll just have to keep the D-Link DSM520 dedicated media server.

I'm returning of the Buffalo Ethernet Converters(WLI-TX4-G54HP). I couldn't get them to work.

I've got my 2 units hardwired now to the router. Now I need to figure out how to stop getting disconnected.

The Buffalo ethernet converter was at my door when I got home. I configured it via the Buffalo Ethernet Converter Manager on my PC, and then connected it to the HR20. The HR20 connected immediately!

And so I've got WMP11 running - what do I do now to access photos and MP3s from the HR20 - I mean what HR20 menu option(s) do I use to get to the photos and music? I'm not seeing anything under the Network menu for them.

You must share the media in WMP11 via the library.

When it is working, hit the menu on the remote for the HR20 and you should see a new entry called Musi & Photos, select it and go from there.

If it is working correctly, you can see pictures and play music.
