I am attempting to upgrade my mom's DTV service and get new equipment. I am trying to determine if we qualify for a new customer deal.

My father passed away and the DTV was in his name. He was a subscriber for over 15 yrs. They have an very old setup with SD Tivo unit in family room and second receiver in bedroom. Since that time, I have gotten my mother new HDTVs for both rooms. We need to change the accounts into her name.

She has ATT phone service and internet to bundle service since I believe ATT has agreement with DTV. Also, she has AAA and costco memberships for new customer options.

I am looking for HR-24 and HD-receiver with updated dish (it would be necessary) for her. Cinema connection kit and deal on Sunday Ticket if possible. She is big football fan.

Can we be a new customer by signing up in her name or contact DTV and change name and negotiate equipment upgrades.

What do you suggest? I don't want this to be an ethical discussion since the original subscriber is no longer in the household.

I would assume that since the original subscriber has passed away, you can cancel his account, (perhaps with a death certificate?) and create a new account on your Moms name. this will entitle her to the new subscriber discounts. I would call D* and ask them about it.

I just talked to a retention rep about your situation and they said it was possible to become a new customer under the situation. However, you are essentially looking for close to nothing. With a 15 year old account the equipment and install will automatically be free. I would also bet money that they would through in the Sunday Ticket for free too.

It's obvious to me you have tons of unused credits just waiting for you to ask for them. Keep in mind that all the freebies you want going forward will be there with an acct. 15+ years. With new accts all those regular goodies, free premiums discounted packages etc. go away. Have your Mother add you to her acct or call from her home and make sure you talk to a "Retention Rep". Explain your situation and I'm "sure" you will get everything you want. I happen to have a long history with Retention and they are there big time for long standing loyal customers.

Thanks for the responses.

I will give a call today. I wanted to know my options before I called in and said the wrong thing. I did not want to ruin my chances to get what she needs for the house.

I meant to get back to you earlier. The retention reps will allow you to negotiate on someone else's behalf. So you can call on your Mother's behalf. When you are satisfied with your negotiating terms have the rep "note" the account. You will not be able to make any changes. After that, have your Mother contact Customer Retention to OK the changes. I do this quite often.

I believe you said your Mother loves Football so by all means ask for the Max package for free too. It's a nice addition which is usually easy to get.

Another tip: Ask the retention rep to pull up her "Retention" screen. They will understand that you are knowledgeable of the process. And by all means let us know how you did!!
