After installing an AM21 has anyone else encountered that the screen blacks out except a few inches or so at the top of the screen where you can barely see the program when fast forwarding or 30 second skip. Did I do something wrong or is this a known bug? If so is there a work-around?

Have alot of experience with AM21's and never saw that.

But keep in mind when you are doing FF or 30 sec skip, you are actually accessing the hard drive on the DVR. So it might be an issue there. Does it still do it after you reboot the DVR?

Yes even after reboot. I have 2 AM21's (purchased at the same time) and both boxes (HR23's bought at the same time as the AM21s) do the identical same thing. You can't fast forward or 30 sec skip past a commercial because you can't see the screen to see when the commercial is over. Only does it with OTA recordings. Doesn't do it with Sat recordings. I have to record off satellite because of this problem but can watch live OTA. Getting ready to move one of them to the new HR34 so I guess I will get to see if it's the AM21 or the combination or something.

Interesting info about the HR23. That I've never had.
I've had AM21/N's with HR21, HR24, H21 and H25's and never saw it.

Might be worth seeing what boxes exhibit this.

Also thinking if an HDMI interface is used, does it do it over component? Probably a pain to try but could be interesting.

This is something that has been mentioned several times over the years. It seems to have a lot to do with the way the local station does their encoding.

Seems my local fox station has this issue. I've had all my receivers exhibit this behavior (local and over MRV) from that station. It's kind of annoying but livable. I wonder if it's fixable on the firmware end...

I have both HR20's and HR22's...happens on both models. I believe that it is not model dependent, but local station dependent. To say you HAVE to record off of sat versions seems a little over the top, you're trying to skip the garbage anyway, who gives a rats patootie if you can't see the whole screen during FF? I hope they find a fix for it eventually but lets be reasonable here.

Yes, it started happening when I installed the 21 with a HR23.

Turning the commercials into garbage isn't really a problem for me, it's just that it makes it hard to tell when the commercial block is over.

Using 30SKIP is a good work around for it.

As someone else also posted, it's not the stuff you're skipping over that matters, its that you can't tell when the commercials/whatever you're skipping over are done so that you can go back to watching tv. As far as being reasonable, the reason I don't like to set to record off Sat for locals/network tv is when I'm not home and a thunder storm (as we're prone to get A LOT in NC) rolls in you don't get a signal for 15 minutes or longer while the storm is doing its thing thereby making a good portion of your recording unwatchable. If I'm home no big deal I just switch to OTA if not already on OTA. I have a HR20 with the OTA tuner built in and it does not do it. Only the receivers with the AM21's connected do it.

Thats where we have different experiences, my HR20 does it as well...but I always record the OTA versions of my locals, because of the better picture quality, and the fact that D* doesnt offer my locals in HD. I almost always use the 30 sec skip function and if I overshoot, its just a matter of a 1 or 2 of the skip back button presses to get to the program's return from commercial break.

Wow I've never heard of the HR20 doing it. I've had mine probably 5 years (whenever they were first offered) and it hasn't done it one time. I used it as my main receiver until 2 years ago and then went with the HR23 because of the extra storage and since I was used to recording locals with OTA antenna I added the AM21 only to find that every channel did the blackout thing on fast forward usually but not 100% of the time. I also notice it does it on reverse too. I wonder if Directv even knows there's a bug with OTA reception.
