Just wondering, does the AM21 generate any heat like the HR20 or HR21? Does it need an AC power source?

It does need an AC source. It plugs into the outlet and the HR21 plugs into the AM21.

I have mine sitting right on top of my HR21 and though I can't tell the temp of the AM21 the HR21 doesn't run any hotter.

The internal fan cycles as it's supposed to so I guess you could say that I wouldn't be able to tell how much heat the AM21 is throwing.

I can put my hand on top and it feels warm but not hot.

The AM-21 does not generate that much heat, but when put on top of the HR-21 does in many cases raise the temperature of that unit. Check your internal temperature with the unit above and below. I finally went with the unit below and put some small wood strips between the units that provide some air flow, if the units are in an enclosure a small fan might be a good idea.

Having had HR21/AM21 in a closed cabinet with only fair ventilation, I can say that the temperatures never got high enough to be a problem.
