The major arguement for the local affiliates system of network TV delivery has been Quote”Those local stations have spent millions in transmitters, antennas, feedlines, and labor to cover a certain area.”

Their investment is history and have been more than paid back. We now have to repeat history for HD. Currently, using old think, we are requiring every local to build new transmission facilities and the satellite companies to add thousands of channels with a cost to each. This is the Multi Billion dollar soution. The locals have already defaulted on their required investment by this year and had the due date pushed to 2009.

Now using new think, a real cheap and simple solution is one set of satellite delivered HD channels for each time zone. That is 16-20 HD channels that are available now and can be delivered now. These stations could be shared by all cable and satellite companies with low integration costs. How about applying the savings to cure diseases, reduce poverty, save social security, etc. We are already doing it this way for all channels other than networks. Imagine requiring HBO or Food Network to have separate channels for a couple of hundred DMAs.

What about the local affiliates? They go the way of Buggy Whip Manufactures, textile mills, shoe factories, oil lamp manufacturers, and thousands of other technologically passed industries. Of course they could utilize new technology and deliver their content on the national distributed HD channels. It would look quite similar to the Weather Channels locals on the 8s.

I have sent two emails to KLBK asking for a HD specific waiver to allow me to receive CBS HD over Dish.

No reply as of now. Next step is a visit to the station this Friday afternoon in person if I get no email response.

Once I get that waiver I'll apply to Dish for CBS HD ( that is if the distant networks court ruling doesn't kibosh that too).

I know of at least on person in Lubbock who already has the waiver and CBS HD out of NY.

EDIT: OOPS, next time I'll read more closely, non-sequitur!

Read the main DNS thread. Waivers for distants are not likely to be worth anything on DISH.

I'd love to know how that turns out, as I am stuck with the lubbock local (smeared) stations and of course no network HD. All this stuff is about is political power for those who can't compete in the marketplace. As long as there are campaign contributions and lobbyests, this will go on and on....When I had distant stations (Dallas and LA) the picture was MUCH sharper, and the sound was better.
