An old problem is back

I have the Notre Dame game on right now on NBC HD (KSL Salt Lake City). There seems to be a lot of compression problems with the change of the picture from camera to camera. It seems to last for about 1 - 1 1/2 seconds then clears up and its very noticeable when they change cameras. Before the rain started the grass was without any detail to it at all. This was the same problem we went thru about 1 - 1 1/2 years ago. Anyone else seeing this? Also they have been having audio dropouts all day on NBC................

I am just outside Seattle and notice the same picture problem, but no audio drop outs. The Oregon game on ABC looks great and the game on CBS looks good. I was thinking the NBC game might be upconvert SD for some reason.
This is an issue with some older MPEG4 encoders trying to do real-time encoding. As you noted, it was a common problem a year ago, but it improved as the encoders were firmware upgraded or replaced. I would assume this means that some older equipment was used for the game in question. Perhaps they had problems with the primary system and had to use backups, or maybe they just never upgraded. Who knows?
Considering what was going on in South Bend I would not be surprised to see NBC stations having problems with the signal OTA. Heavy weather and satellite signals do not mix well.

the 2nd half was a BUNCH of rain but the first half was pretty sunny and that's when I thought the problem was worse.
I only saw the ending ... and I lost OTA reception during some of that storm.

Take a look at the next NBC game ... perhaps they will do better or perhaps they did do this game with "old" equipment.
