We have an HD DVR receiver. Our other receiver is just an HD receiver without the DVR. I was wanting to upgrade to another HD DVR receiver, but the gentleman I was talking to said an install was needed because another line would have to be added for the 2nd HD DVR. Our installs aren't regular installs. They have to go up in our attic and do what is called wall fishing. Which D* doesn't pay for--we do.
I didn't want to have to have another wall fishing done. So I didn't make the change. But the gentleman couldn't really explain to me why the line we have for the HD standard receiver couldn't support an HD DVR receiver  Can someone here explain it to me using very simple terms because High Tech I'm not? Thanks!

Well I wish the guys that did the wall fishing in the bedroom had thought of that. At the time that room wasn't ready for HD so they made it HD ready, but I guess they didn't think about the turners :( But thanks for the information :) I knew someone could explain it to me here  Well wait a minute how do I know that they didn't make it ready? There are two cables coming out of the wall. One is hooked to the HD receiver and the other one is just hanging down out of the wall.

You could still use the HD DVR with only 1 line... but you would only be able to watch or record 1 program at a time...
That's what I am doing. Does it matter what input the line is connected to? I do not have an SWM or any other fancy stuff.

And is the HR21 smart enough to not record on the 2nd, unconnected, line? I don't want the HR21 to think that it can record 2 shows at once when it can't.

I thought there would be an option in setup for "how many satellite connections do you have?" but I was unable to find it if it's there. The manual appears to be silent on the issue as well.

You have a really good point and I don't know how in the world to find out :nono: :( But I will say it has to be attached to something because it can't be pulled out of the wall.
Well let's do a process of elimination:

1.Are both coax's the same color?,If so what color and if you can read any writing on the cables what does it say?
2.Do you live in an area that has cable access?
3.Is there an OTA antenna on the house or was there ever?

The answer to these 3 questions may solve your question.;)

It should not matter.... Just connect it to input 1... and reboot the unit... It should recognize that only 1 sat line is connected...

Dolly, switch your current receiver to the unused line and see if you get your channels. It might just be properly connected to the satellite dish on the other end.

I think it is because the guys that did the wall fishing were supposed to set it up for HD and they did put two lines in so there had to be a reason for them doing that. I ordered the HD DVR anyway. But as always D* messed up my account in the process  I still think something is wrong with their computer programming system. What are the odds that every time I have to call D* I get a sub-par CRS :eek2:
